Wife called yesterday and said van won't run. I towed it home and it sounds terrible when I tied to start it. Never owned an overhead cam vehicle before but it sounds to me like the timing chain is history.
I ordered a Haynes shop manual from NAPA and plan on pulling the timing cover to have a look see. 1997 E-350 has limited room to work, how much trouble am I in for? Van currently has 143000 miles and need a new A/C compressor so plan on doing that at the same time. Any thing else I should look for, water pump, etc.?

Before you start tearing things apart based on a Haynes manual definitely post your symptoms in FTE's V10 forum!!!!
As Jim suggests the knowledge base there far, far exceeds the Haynes publications by miles and miles.
FWIW I'm running two different V8 Modular Motors which are essentially the same engine as the V10 version. Both are well over 200K miles, one @ 275K, the other just now @ 225K miles----water pump, radiator etc all still in good working order however there's no real harm past the cost of preemptively replacing parts while you're (potentially) working on the timing chains and tensioning system.
Do keep in mind there are updated chain guides and other associated parts which are almost automatically provided these days even though your year is a bit older.
Do yourself a huge favor and devour as much info on this topic in the V10 forums----you'll be a PhD in that subject in no time flat.
Hope this isn't as severe as you fear----please keep us updated if you have time.
It was bad, rod through the block. looking for transplant.
Wow that is bad news---sorry 'bout that.
If you have a local or close-by LKQ salvage yard affiliate contact them for another resource. They're nationwide and can/will transfer something distant to the local outlet free of charge.
Believe it or not I've found a few good used but running engines through Craig's List. Most were 50-60 miles away but price and condition was right.
