v10 or v8

Hi, I'm looking at buying a 2003 F250 with a v10 or a v8. I see that most of you here think the v10 is a long lasting engine. Isn't the v8 the same engine with 2 less cylinders?
I looked up the timing chain tensioner and cam phasers on Autozones website and saw both engines used the same ones, (from years of reading these forums I've gathered that they seem to be a common problem).
Is there anything about the v10 that is different.
I'm driving almost all city driving with close to 2000 lbs in the bed. Which one should I buy?
Thanks

Both are very reliable motors, the V10 sucks more gas but makes more power. Either is a good choice and I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. I'd probably take the V10 in your shoes, since it will handle the weight better.

With 2000# in the bed you can complain about the 5.4 being a dog and sucking gas or the V10 just sucking gas. Either one will do the job well, just one being a little slower.

Timing chain tensioner and cam phasers I don't believe is a common problem but put enough miles on anything and you'll need to repair something sooner or later.

I'd go v8

Ive had both, and 2000lb is not going burden the 5.4

the v10 WILL use more gas especially in town

I should also say,

both engines will be the simple 2 valve design. I believe that means no cam phasers.

Correct, the 2 valve (2V) Triton engines do not have cam phasers.

Either one would work well. 1 ton in the bed will just make the truck ride smoother.

I have been kicking around buying a Crew Cab 08 and up for my next truck. I don't need the diesel now but it scares the heck out of me to buy a 5.4L in such a big truck. I am used to having plenty of HP when I need it from my 6.0L. What fuel mileage are you guys seeing out of the V-10?

No Haters OK......

Decide based on capability.

A 2008 F-250 or F-350 SRW, crew cab 4x4 with a 5.4L engine, automatic, 4x4 with 4.10 gears is rated to tow 11,200 pounds, conventional bumper tow. Same truck with the 6.8L V-10 is rated to tow 12,500 pounds.

The V8 will use nearly as much fuel and more in some cases. The 3 valve V10 will use more fuel than the older 2V's but have more power. I've driven two 5.4's and have owned the older 2v V10 and a 10' V10. No comparison between a 5.4 and a newer V10.
This is a 7000lb+ truck. If you have the choice go for the bigger motor. If you are really concerned about fuel costs and you aren't really using the truck maybe a smaller F150 is the better choice.

We all want the best possible fuel mileage but when asking it for mileage in a 7K-8K # truck and 10 cylinders your not going to like what you might read and the variables to driving styles and conditions can alter the results.

For the truck in my sig I averaged 10.02 miles per gallon for the past year driving 60,152 miles. That's the average For towing/city and highway combined.

Coming from a DSL with plenty of torque I would think you would be really unhappy with the 5.4 when your probably use to stepping on it and getting it to go quick. Now if you have grown out of the hurry and get it done yesterday feeling the 5.4 might fill your needs nicely.

I'm juggling 3 vehicles here and trying to decide what to do. Fuel mileage doesn't concern me but I'm trying to figure out what is best for my situation. I can pitch 2 vehicles and buy the V-10 or pitch the opposite, keep my diesel and buy a 5.4L. I have to maintain one, that will pull a 24,000 lb goose neck equipment trailer or buy a drop deck and partner with my neighbor who has a semi setting most of the year on the farm.

Now I really HI-Jacked the thread and confused you all in the same time...

If you are used to a tuned 6.0, I don't think you will be happy with any gasser, unless the power isn't that big an issue for you.

I have driven a 3v V10 with the TS trans and wouldn't trade for my sig truck. (power wise, not value wise) and mine is just an old 7.3 dinasour

If you're going pull "24,000#" you left the 250/350 gas/DSL arena and moving to a larger platform.

I pull in stock form, I had a 1995 7.3L....we won't go there. These are the 2 trucks I narrowed it down to in my area but my 6.0L would have to go.

2008 37,173 miles
2008 92,758 miles
