My alternator on a 1973 Ford F100 is working only intermittently. I have had the alternator checked and it tested good. Taken the cover off the regulator and points are closing so assume it is OK. Cleaned terminals between alternator and battery. Worked when I first started it this spring for a short time then quit then stared working again then quit and has not work again. With all I have done is there a way to check some things out while the truck is running without taking parts off and having them tested.
Here's a link to a really good troubleshooting procedure. Also, this is important, always check for "voltage drop" in high current carrying circuits. The test is a little different than it sounds. Ground and start Cables are a lot cheaper than alternators and starters and solenoids and switches so.... Since they are over 40 years old they are well past the "Best By" date. Replace them. Good grounding is the key to good charging, good starting, bright lights, good hot ignition, etc. High resistance will smoke everything under the hood eventually.
