Front End Noise

My 1990 F250 4x4 truck is making a clicking noise as I drive down the road. It sounds like it is coming from the front drivers side tire. It only occurs while the wheel is turning. As soon as I apply the brakes the noise ceases. I release the brake and the noise begins again. I am wondering if a part somewhere by the axle, spring or brake assembly has worked loose? I have not had any time to look yet. I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem and if so, please let me know what they found, so I can minimize the time spent upside down looking at the under side of my truck.

the lug nuts might not be tighten down all the way so the wheel is moving around on the studs as you drive or turn

Post Front End Noise

we had the same problem with a clicking noise on our 90 f250 4x4 that we thought was coming from the front wheel turned out to be the rear drive shaft - we replaced the u-joint. all better now - so check your u-joints.

Have you checked your ball joints? Brake caliper or brake pads

we put new brake pads on the front the calibers where tight but it feels like the left hub is not unlocking, its has been doing it for a while when the hubs was locked in. so now it is making the noise all the time when the hubs are free. sounds like a bearing noise ?

Mine isn't 4x4 but suffered the same problem last week. Replaced all the front wheel bearings and, man what a difference.

Mine is making the same noise. I found the ujoint faulty, I am taking the opportunity to replace both U joints, all 4 ball joints and the bearings and the brake pads, might as well while it's up on the lift!

My hunting/fishing/towing truck is 1990 f-250 4x4 TTB D44hd front axle w/click (more like klunk) from both sides front that goes away with slightest brake pedal pressure.

Did all the checks- shock mounts tight, wheel bearings ok, recent axle u-joint r&r (still tight) , new caliper bolts (some call them pins or slides), lug nuts tight, spring/shackle bushings ok, u-bolts tight, axle pivot bushings ok, but still clunking while rolling. Calipers can be moved between knuckle lands nearly 1/4" with new bolts installed.

This truck sat for around 8 years before I rescued it from the bone pile in 2008.
Turns out either the calipers or the knuckles (maybe both) developed enough scaly rust while sitting for 8yrs that new bolts or pins no longer provide proper spec between knuckle and caliper.

Ive read on FTE where many many others have experienced same phenom and one poster even reported welding knuckles to build up the lands.

I recently acquired a complete front axle for very little money sooooo during warmer weather will do complete front axle over haul/swap in--for now I will just put up with annoying clunk
