So I brought the (new to us) X over to Firestone to have new tires put on. In the process of lowering the truck, they gouged the passenger side extended mirror. To their credit, they admitted to it and the manager ordered me a new one. Today I went over to have it installed. I walked across the street and came back and the manager had this look on his face. Apparently, the new mirror had some sort of writing on it (probably in grease pencil) and the brainy tech decided to use some sort of solvent to clean it. "Melted" the plastic finish pretty bad, surface only. So a second new mirror is on order and i will be going over there for the third time in two weeks. The manager asked me if I wanted the melted mirror and I said yes, why not.
Just wondering if anyone thought this could be successfully painted. Like I said, it is surface damage only. I thought maybe I could keep it as a spare or maybe sell it on Ebay.
Degrease it and spray with some trim paint. I want to say Krylon Fusion is a good brand. Or just take both mirrors off and plastidip them black. Shouldnt be too hard to get them looking good again.

Excellent, I was hoping somebody had a suggestion as to what paint to use. Too bad they aren't interchangeable with the left side, then I could have two new mirrors.
looks to me like the plastic underneath is that brittle white plastic that the Chinese use instead of the factory solid black plastic. if so my guess is that paint was probably not going to ever stick long to begin with. I would sand it down with 220p and just repaint them. you can use any enamel rattle can paint but it will fade in time. if you want to do a factor color match you can order it in spray cans as either a 1 part single stage or a 2 part 2 stage base /clear for the ultimate factory match. the 1 part urethane base in rattle can and then a 2 part clear in a can run about $20 each.
I painted my back hatch trim piece using rustoleum enamel gloss black without a clear coat about a year ago and it still looks decent.
Talk to that manager and find out how much he is paying for these mirrors, then float the idea of either buying you a set of the 1aauto '08 mirrors or just paying you instead of getting the new mirror and then you could upgrade to the better mirrors. Make some lemonade from this recent lemon.

I was gonna suggest you find out where he's ordering the mirror from. Non-OEM mirrors are not equal, and as good as the 1A mirrors are, even they aren't as good as OEM.
If he's not buying OEM, I would insist he do so, or at the very least, just give you the equivalent in cash and let you buy the mirror or mirrors, should you choose to upgrade to a set of non-OEM mirrors.
Looking again at the last pic. It says "made in Taiwan" right between the mirrors. Definitely a knock off but as stated, all knock offs are not the same. Make sure you are happy with the image quality of whatever mirror they give you. Cheap ones can be wavy and hard to see things in. Some of them vibrate so bad in the housing that they are useless to see anything. Good luck!
