Thermostat

I am putting new Terminator thermostat from Riffraff in my F350 7.3. I have installed many thermostats in gas cars, but never a diesel truck. I am hoping that it is straight forward much like a gas car. Is their anything that is different? Do I need to purge the air out? If so ,is there a purge valve? Thanks

It is just like putting a thermostat in a gasser. The only difference is the thermostat housing neck. It is just tin, and is prone to leaking when removed and reinstalled. I always have to use a thin layer of RTV on the o-ring and base of the neck.

I pulled the thermostat housing off and removed the o-ring and cleaned the housing up and started to put housing and thermostat on and realized I couldn't remember if the o-ring goes under the thermostat or on top of it. In other words does the o-ring drop into groove and then thermostat sits on top of o-ring or does thermostat go into groove first and then o-ring? Can't believe I didn't make a note of how it went back together. I'm also replacing top and bottom radiator hoses and I'll be working on that until someone tells me how the o-ring goes back. Truck is a 1997.

+1 on the neck T-stat length. There are 2 floating around and at least 1 auto parts store sold me the wrong one. I'd have used it if not for researching on this forum. Also +1 on a thin layer of RTV, even with the o-ring. Chances are high that it will leak. Otherwise, just like a gaser.

The last t-stat I changed had a rubber o-ring that went around both sides of the thermostat. Oh, and every one I changed leaked. A new housing fixed every one.

Permanent fix for the flimsy t-stat housing/leak issue - https://www.strictlydiesel.com/p-267...sing-ring.aspx - also includes MUCH better quality bolts. And no stikkky stuff required.
