Diesel clack

Anyone know what makes a 6.0 or 7.3 "clack"? I am not experienced enough with internals of a diesel to understand it.

Reason I ask, is my 6.0 is clackier than ANY other 6.0 or 7.3 that I have encountered. I mean it really cackles. Injector timing?

the engine was "bulletproofed" and (as the seller stated to me) was "flashed with a custom designed tune made by a Powerstroke specialist"... to which I have no further information on. This I assume was done for longevity and not performance.

Its quiet on the highway, but in town and stop-starts or low speed acceleration it is crazy cackly.

Just curious. Thanks guys.

Could be the rocker plates working a smidgen loose. It'd be more apparent around town due to less ambient and background noise compared to the freeway. Not uncommon on the 7.3's, I have no idea about the 6'ers. I know when I went to bigger sticks mine went from a nice smooth idle to sounding like an OBS, lol.

Haven't heard it called clack before. Clatter, yes. Clack no. Interesting

I would find out who wrote the tune that was flashed onto your PCM.

Not all custom tunes are the same, and depending on how the tune was written, can cause injectors to be louder.

If you can't find who wrote the tunes, I would check into having the PCM reflashed by someone who you have done homework on and trust, based on the info you gather.

What modifications have been done to the rig?

Also, gonna move this over to the 6.0L PSD forum so they can chime in too.

Stewart

PS - You should add to your signature which engine you have, since the MY 2003 Excursions and F-Series trucks could be had with both 7.3L PSD's and 6.0L PSD's, and that info isn't listed in your sig.

I would bet on the tune making it noisy.

If you can be without the truck for a few days I would send it off to
FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
They can flash it stock or something that will make you and the truck happy.

If you don't have the time you can go to a dealer and they can unload your
wallet for some shop time and flash it to the most resent.

It's probably the tune. I can tell you playing with the desired ICP and IPR% on the scanner while idling, I can hear a definite change in tone of the engine. The tune is probably running a higher ICP @ hot idle than the normal 585 psi.
Have you ever unplugged the ICP while it was running? Did the clacking go away? What is your IPR and ICP @ idle hot?

The clatter/cackle from a diesel has to do with the large pressure rise when the fuel is injected. The quicker the pressure rises, the louder the noise. The 6.0 has a single injection like most diesels before it. The newer engines use multiple smaller injections to slow the pressure rise down and reduce the noise.

Listen to a 6.4 or 6.7 Ford, a lot quieter. Almost too quiet in my opinion!

FYI, your 03 did come stock with 2-injections and was very quiet at idle, but that was soon removed from the programming due to injector issues. I don't think any 04s got it.

Thanks for the replies, cant send the FICM away for a tune, not feasible for me. FICM voltage is good though from what I measured.

Injectors have been replaced once, straight exhaust (sort of, there is a straight muffler that has a larger inside diameter than the exhaust tubing), EGR delete, new HPOP screen, turbo has been serviced/cleaned. That's all I know that has been done. And the custom flashed tune.

I appreciate all the feedback guys, its my family daily driver so was looking to quiet it down, even just a little bit. I KNOW ITS A DIESEL, and its loud, but it is unusually loud for a 6.0. thanks

I didn't see Head Studs in part of the "bullet proofed" list. Running an unknown tune is not wise, you don't know if it is ok to tow with it or what it is doing -- just for that reason alone I'd either get back in touch with the PO and find out what the tune is (or who did it and ask them), or pull it out.

Running a performance tune and not studded is playing Russian Roulette and could (likely will) get expensive fast...

I forgot that there is a third way to get back to stock.
Power Hungry Performance
can send a programmer to him and then read what
is in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and the FICM
(Fuel Injection Control Module). They can them do a roll back
to the best performing strategy.

OK so I finally got a hold of the shop that worked on my truck.

EGR deleted
VV turbo cleaned out
oil cooler replaced
8 injectors
hpop screen replaced
and...

a 130hp tune, on stock headbolts......

The shop said they advised against it strongly, but the guy I bought the truck from insisted.

He said if im not towing, and I dont bag the crap out of it, it will likely be fine. Sounds a little scary, the only local shop I found doing tunes charges 170$ for re-flash.

Should this worry me?

Who wrote the tune? Is the tune a pre-canned tune or a custom written tune for your truck?
