...had a run-in with an S10 last weekend courtesy of a sleet/snowstorm which turned local roads into iceskating rinks. On the plus side my F-150 may have taken a bit of a beating but at least i was able to drive away afterwards, the S10 needed a flatbed towtruck to cart it's remains off.
Just got the first estimates back from my insurance company, would you believe that this damage (pic below) comes to over $2000 in repairs? I'm still waiting on the final decision as to what damage may have happened to the suspension/drivetrain as well (getting some disturbing vibrations from the front end over 40mph) but if this is the bill for the bodywork alone i'm starting to wonder if the insurance company isn't going to just give up and write off my truck entirely.
I'd hope that $2K will cover some mechanical repairs as well... maybe ball joints or wheel bearings? I'd bet that the body parts, if you shop wisely, would total about $500 tops. Of course, if they pay you $2K to get it fixed, get the parts and do some/most/all of the work yourself! Since you're worried about being written off, I guess they found you at fault? Sucks...
icy roads and an intersection at the bottom of two hills = 5 accidents within a 50 yard section of road in a 15 minute time period (mine was just the first). The police cars and tow trucks that responded almost became part of the problem when they barely managed to stop without hitting my truck. The official police report stated that the weather conditions were responsible for what happened and that neither driver was at fault. My insurance company is trying to claim that the other driver failed to stop at the stop sign so he should be at fault but regardless i'd rather not have to give up my truck over this incident simply because the repairs are considered to be "too expensive".
I initially thought the estimate included mechanical repairs as well but when i looked at the write-up the only thing i could find was a note that the truck needed an alignment and "further inspection" to determine the cause of the vibration (but with no $ amount on that line).
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the final decision is gonna be...
OK here is how you do it...go to dealers(at least 2) and get the estimates done. Then you have it done at a regular non-dealer shop. You should have $$ left over for something else that may need fixed or at least a CD.
Body shop estimates can add up real quickly now-days. True, it can be a can of worms when taking the front end apart and finding more damage. It is tough to say but your front end vibration could be simply wheel balance or minor steering components that were knocked out of adjustment/alignment. I agree with the above posts. If you do the work yourself and get salvage yard parts, the cost could be very cheap. Including major axel parts. Dealers always are high priced for repairs. A private shop can sometimes be cheaper depending on the quality of the paint and labor. Good luck. Jake.
I have seen some vibration problems caused by snow , slush etc freezing to the insides of rims etc that will cause what you describe , Its also possible the rim on the right front was damaged during the collision . It doesnt take much damage to a rim to cause vibration problems . It looks like you have aluminum rims , they damage much easier than steel rims .
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Jan-02 AT 02:12 AM (EST)]An out of balance wheel situation is very probable. My 94' F-150 has aluminum wheels. It don't take much of a bump to sometimes knock the balance weights off of one of the rims. Before you know it, vibration action comes into play. My 94' lost two weights once in our drywall yard. One of our drivers ran over a 3" x 3" block of wood. Knocked two inside balance weights right off of the rim. I had to have that peticular wheel sent out for re-balancing. Hope this may be your problem. At least it is a cheap way out. Good luck. Jake.
I know how much of a pain in the butt dealerships can be, I rear-ended a gal in April and It took them a month to put on a new door, left front fender, grill and lights and then paint it. I could have put the new parts on in about a week, even with school. But, I didn't want to hastle with finding the parts.
I can get you started with a new corner light if you want to buy it off me. It's about 9 months old, i got a new one because i got in an accident and broke the original one, but i got clear corner lights now and have two yellow corner lights left over.
