block and head modifications

what are some if any modifications that need to be done to a cleveland block (I.E. oil galeries on a ford FE engine) or heads prior to a rebuild that will make it reliable and less likely to wear prematurely the example i am using is the oil galleries for an FE engine are too small and need to be enlarged, the hold for the crank saddle are not lined up with the holes in the main bearings, and toooooo much oil is kept in the heads thus some people restrict the flow to the top end, my buddy is building a pretty hot cleveland engine and wants to know all the ins and outs of doing the job right

Kinda depends on the max rpm expected. Up to 5,000rpm I wouldn't do anything other than chamfering oil holes and cleaning out all the passages well.

Clevelands developed a reputation of bad oiling. While it is true to a point, it was really a high rpm oriented problem. Like Beartracks said, up to 5000 rpm, there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

It really depends on how the engine will be used. If it will see a lot of rpm, some oiling mods would be desirable. For street use, just chamfer the holes, use good bearings, always have high quality oil in it, and I like high volume oil pumps. Also consider a windage tray.

I'd do some port work on the exhaust side of the heads and probably avoid 4V heads unless all out racing. I'd also convert it to electronic ignition.

Where are you located? Near Mobile area?
