Is there two different types of gas caps for 67-72 F100's?
I bought the same type cap for my longbed that I have for my shortbed and it does not stay on.
any suggestions?

Yep, there is. An open system with a vented cap and a closed (evaporative emissions) system with a non-vented cap and a charcoal canister on the frame rail under the hood for the tank fuel vapors to be stored before burned by the engine. As of 1970. 70's could be either way. The vented cap had normal retainer tags that hold the cap in. The Ev/Em caps had deeper tangs that fit down in the filler neck deeper.
