91 f250 issues

91 f250 issues
Hi guys.
I just got a 91 F-250 with a 460. This morning the batteries was dead. I went to jump start it.
The fuseable link from the alternator to the start relay caught fire and melted.
Now the truck will fire up but idols very rough and dies after 5 seconds.
My test light and multimeter is at work till tommrow.
Any ideas as to where to start?

Sounds like the computer might be in limp-home mode. When you turn the key to the "On" position, does the fuel pump keep running?
It also sounds like you may be a victim of the infamous 2G alternator.

Yes the fuel pump was running. Just after the wire burn up. Now how do I get it out of limp mode.
Could you explain a little more on this 2G alternator?

The fuel pump should only run for 1 second when you turn the key on. If it keeps running, that unfortunately means the computer is not functioning.
Have you checked all the fuses? You didn't accidentally cross the jump leads did you?

So what is the fix for the computer. Replacement?
Positive i had the jumpers correct.

So I pulled the computer.
Has a burn spot on it. So it's toast.
The fuseable link from the alternator is what went up in smoke.
Think the alternator is bad and killed the computer?

Possibly. I'd just chuck it and do the 3G alternator upgrade.
