Odd Problem

Hi all. This is my first post in this forum. 1988 F250 with a 460. Lately the truck will quit running. It just shuts off. Here is the odd part. When this happens the frame mounted fuel pump keeps running. The truck has 45 psi at the test port. The truck also has spark. If I turn the key off and then back on I know if the truck is going to run by listening to the fuel pump. If the pump runs for a second or so and then turns off the truck will start. If I turn the key on and the fuel pump keeps running the truck will not start. I believe that the ecu/ecm or whater you call the computer controls the fuel pump relay. My best guess is that the computer is bad. I have cleaned the wiring connector and nothing changed. Does any one in this forum have any thoughts on this problem? Sorry for such a long post but I am trying to give all the pertinant information.

From what I have read on this forum if the fuel pump does not cycle off when the key is turned on and the engine is not started it it would look like the ecm could be the problem.Maybe some of the other members have some suggestions.

Have you checked to make sure the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have gas coming out the vacuum port?

There is no fuel coming out of the vacuum side of the regulator and the regulator is working.

Thanks to all that responded. It's nice to have people confirm my diagnosis. Does any one know of a good source for a good used or a reman computer?
Thanks again.
PS. What a great forum. I only wish I had found it years ago.

Good call quicklook.

Clearly the problem here.

Just shop around. Most places dont have warranties on them anyways if I remember right. Remember cheaper probably isn't always better!
