help with wheels and tires

ok guys I got popped by our town clowns for my height and wheel width beyond my fenders. I'm sitting on 38x15.5x20's. I have a frame height of 30"s and my wheels stick out about 4"s from my fenders. Maryland law says I have to be at 28"s max from the bottom of my frame. And I have to have flares or narrow wheels and tires. so I'm think of going to a 35" tire to drop the truck down but I don't want to get much narrower tires. I like the aggressiness of the width I have. I'm prepared to put flares on the truck as well. how ever the best I can find is a toyo open country 35x13.5x20. If I buy a entire new wheel and tire package what kind of back spacing on the rim would I need to keep the wide stance? I wouldn't mind coming down smaller in rim size too, like a 18".

Ha! Maryland Huh.

I used to get Popped by the Po Po all the time in my 70 Charger R/T back then (Air Shocks). They were always pulling us to check rear bumper height, especially by MIR on Rt #5.

MSP Don't Play that Game ;-)

Do yourself a favor and get it within specs. I (and my buddies) spent thousands just to get tickets thrown out. What else you gonna do when you're 19?

If you go with new wheels you will need to go rather narrow on the tires unless you want to rub. I just purchased new wheels and tires last week and the shortest back space I could find was 4.53 inches. If you want to stay that wide on tires you are going to rub...bad. While a set of flares and some 12.5 - 13.5 width tires may solve some of the legal issues, that won't solve the rub issues. You must have between a 6-12 inch lift on it and going down to 35's with that much lift and tires that wide will look ridiculous in my opinion but it's not my truck so that's on you. Unless you spend a lot of time in deep mud, there are much better choices out there that will make the truck perform better all year around. Now, if it's just the "look" you want, you will have to deal with all the negatives that go along with that choice. JMHO

MSP and the county boys havent messed with us in a long time. But the Laplata town cop has a hard on for trucks. I think his parents bought him a yugo............ I know most of the county boy,s hell I had them at the boat ramp last night talking fishing and they never even looked at my truck.
Any how I just need to get the frame height to 28" and put fender flares on if I stay with the wide stance. My 38x15.5x20 rub the springs in tight turns aint nothing I'm worried about. I'm wanting to get toyo open country 35x13.5x20 but want to keep that wide stance the 15.5 give me. I put in some windshield time with my truck pulling my boat and delivering fish up to Baltimore so I do want a more road friendly tire. The next thing I can do is put my company name on the truck and DOT numbers and then it considered commercial. Commercial trucks can have a 30" frame height but I would have to put mud flaps on it.
