Question No drain plug in trany

Would like to change transmission oil in 1987 F150 light duty 4 speed manual transmission. No drain plug. Want to drill and tap for plug. Is the round boss on the bottom the correct place to drill?

You can pick up a drain plug kit here:

My original idea was to get a self-tapping drain plug, but this looks like a better idea.

When you've got the pan off, look for a place where the drain plug won't interfere with the internals of the tranny, and drill there.

Does a 4 speed manual transmission have a removeable pan?

Duh. Maybe I should have read your post a little more closely; I thought you were working with an automatic.

I can't believe there is no drain plug. It is probably on the side.

Ludis, I understand your dismay! But there is no plug, it is not that uncommon on a light duty gear box. I was hoping that some one out there had one apart and could tell me what was inside above the round boss on the bottom that looks like it should have a plug in it. As things stand now I will go in the top and pump the oil out, this will not get all the droppings out of the bottom but it will get fresh oil to the gears. Please do not tell me to use a magnet to get the filings out of the bottom, there is just no room to get a rod down the side. I have had MoPars and Toys appart and have a good idea what is in there. I can't help you about where to drill, but I know the delimma you are in. I must have the same tranny, because I had to borrow a suction pump and pump it out from either the fill hole or the shifter hole, I can't remember which. Is your transmission an overdrive 4th gear?

Try taking the bottom bolt out of the extension housing. Some manual transmissions do drain that way.

is the round mark where the magnet sits??

(I have no experience with these) but if it is where the donut magnet sits, I'd not drill there, myself..
