Whilst preparing for doing the timing belt and water pump job on both my 19yo's '06 Outback and my 18yo's '99 4Runner, I ran across a recommendation to use the tool linked below...
For some of you more experienced and tool-laden brothers, this tool may not be a new discovery for you, but I'm sure that there are others who can benefit from having this tool on hand the same way I did today.
Not the cheapest option, but after doing the job on the Outback this afternoon, the tool was a life saver. I'm definitely glad I bought it and will enjoy the fact that it is available for future use on similar jobs.
Have not tried it on the 7.3 yet, as I've not had a need. Within my family of kids, though, I have an Infiniti, Subaru, Toyota, and a Honda, all of which is aside from my two 7.3's. Lots of future potential, especially with one more getting her license within a year or so.
Also not sure about the water pump pulley bolts. The arms are 1/4" thick steel, though, so there is lots of meat for a bolt to hold into. I have not checked to thread pitch on the holes, but if I had to guess, I would say they are somewhere around 5/16 or 3/8 with a fine thread.
I shared primarily because I know a lot of you guys in here also have imports and other makes/models, so even if it doesn't fit our 7.3's in any way, shape, or form, the info could benefit a lot of us anyway in regards to working on our other vehicles.
I think Y2K had a little negativity towards a similar tool when attempting to use it on his 7.3. I just saw that post a few days ago in an alternator thread or Rich's stinky's in the stirrups....
