Does anyone know if a transmission out of a 93 OBS gas truck fit in a 97 diesel? I have both with a 5 speed 4x4. The 97 has a broke tail housing. Just wondering if they would swap.
In short, no. The diesel tranny has a different bolt pattern than the gasser one. Some have redrilled the 460 gasser tranny to fit the diesel, but I don't like the idea of that. Depending how handy you are, the front case for the diesel will bolt to the rear case of the gasser tranny. You would then have the gasser geared tranny behind the diesel, which some say is better for towing.
The shift shaft differs between the -42 and -47 and the bore depth in the housing reflects this.
On a -42 the deeper bore is on the front half of the case, on the -47 it's on the rear half. You can put a -42 front half on a -47, with no modifications other than shimming. A -47 front half with a -42 rear half you end up with both short bores. You might be able to shorten the shaft, but if may end up too short to stay engaged in the bores.
A small block ZF5 won't mount to a diesel. The ZF5's had 3 different bellhousing patterns. 1 was for the small block pattern (302/351 and maybe the 300 straight six has that same pattern) one for the 460, and one for the diesel.
As farmert said, some people take the 460 ZF transmission and drill out two of the holes to mate to the diesel, but that's because the gas 460 transmission bolt pattern is very close to the diesel so this can work. The small block bolt pattern is much different so it won't work at all. If it's behind a 300, then it's not going to mount to the 7.3.
