My washer pump doesn't work, partially due to no juice (I tried jumpering juice to it too, and it still didn't work, but that is another story.) I pulled the switch down, and there is a semi circle of wires around one edge, with the red main hot wire more or less centered. Opposite that the is white (supposed to be white/blue? per my wiring diagram) wire to the washer motor. When I turn on the wipers everything functions correctly, but the white wire I assume would be intermittent hot when I push the washers button is always hot. The dark wire just by the red wire is too; the rest either get juice when different speed positions or seem to get no juice at all. I am pretty sure this is not like the dome light (always hot through the bulb till the switch completes the circuit to ground) but I'm puzzled why no post gets current when the washer button is pushed. Or, is it a simple case of a bad switch?
I just had a similar problem in my 79. I was doing the intermittent switch upgrade. After the upgrade I realized my washer pump wasn't working and I couldn't remember if it was working before I replaced the switch.
The white wire (same color as mine FYI) should only be hot when you push the washer switch in. Mine did work correctly there so I went out to the engine bay and tried testing/jumping wiring in different configurations with no luck.
Finally I just replaced the washer pump and it worked just fine. So for whatever reason, testing/jumping hot/ground to the pump didn't work for me either, but moral is that it was fine.
Your constantly hot white wire is probably a problem though. I'd replace the switch first, get the intermittent switch from a JY.
There's a youtube video on doing the intermittent upgrade and it will also give you part numbers and years/models that you can yank it from. Completely plug and play
I'll try replacing the switch and the motor...if worst comes to worst, I can always run a wire directly from the switch plug to the washer, I guess. Funny that there is no juice at the pump, as if there was an open circuit of some sort between the white wire and the green washer pump wire up front. (All my fuses test hot on both sides, too, so it likely is not a blown fuse unless there is a secondary fuse block I don't know about!)
Yes, and that it is a working ground. I checked current at the pump, the ground at the pump, ran a hot jumper to the power side of the pump, jumpered the ground side to ground, and jumpered BOTH sides directly to power and ground. I'm thinkin' the motor is more stubborn than I am.
