97 Explorer 4.0 Will Not Start
I know that there are three things that a vehicle needs to start: Charge, spark and fuel. I have trouble shot it down to the fuel, and before I replace the fuel pump I need some more advise and wisdom.
Here's the problem
No fuel pressure, fuel pump works
Here's the story
I realized that it was a fuel problem because there was no pressure at the Shrader valve located up by the throttle body. I switched around the relays and got the fuel pump working, hearing the distinct whine it makes. When I checked the pressure on the valve, only a dribble of fuel leaked out and there is now a rich smell of gasoline permeating from the engine. I must have tried to start it about 30 times (never once touching the gas pedal), and I figured the engine was flooded from all the turning it off and then back on. I came back 24hrs later figuring the 116° temp would evaporate it off, but it didn't. The next day, the smell of fuel was not there, until I went to turn it over, and the problem remains the same--does not start, heavy smell of fuel.
As you can see from the other thread it is not electrical at all. I even checked the inertia switch. Since switching around the relays, this fuel problem is new--well, I guess it was there all along, but the smell of fuel has me concerned. My friend that I work with had a similiar problem, but he had no trouble starting his. His problem was actually an o-ring in the gas tank.
Could I have the same problem, or could it be the fuel pump or the fuel line, or the fuel filter? Besides the fuel pump, is there anything else that I can check or do myself?
