I have a problem with my 87 F-250 with the drivers side electic windown being stuck open after it is opened all the way. It will open and close fine as long as it is not opened all the way to the end of its travel.
Up until yesterday, I have been pretty good about remembering not to open the window all the way. Unfortunately, my memory failed yesterday and I ran the window all the way down. It doesn't even sound like it's trying to move (when I hit the up button). I'm a new owner of the truck and I was aware of the problem before the purchase but not familiar with exactly what needs to be done to fix it.
Would the replacement of the entire electric motor #####embly correct this problem, or, is there some other type of switch mechanism incorporated in the system to shut the motor off when it gets to the end of its travel? It really seems like an interlock of some sort.
Is it possible to do repairs on the motor #####embly itself or is it best to just replace the whole #####embly?
Input from somebody who has had the problem would be great.
Sorry for such a rudimentary repair question. I'm still trying to locate a factory service manual for the truck.
Alex , It sounds like the motor is on its last legs . They arent that expensive & fairly easy to replace . Youll have to remove the door panel & unstick the plastic vaopr barrier . The motor is held to the door frame with 3 rivets which you have to drill out . Before you remove the motor its best to have the window up , take some wide masking tape & secure the window to the door frame in a few places to hold the gl##### up because once you remove the motor , the regulator , gl##### & all will drop quickly . The new motor will come with 3 new bolts to secure it to the door frame . Also check the regulator for smooth operation , there are some points that you can lubricate with some white lithium grease including the regulator toothed section .
For what it's worth, I had the same problem on my 93. I replaced the motor, and while it did work, it sounded like the motor was really straining. I did some more recon work and noticed that the whole track assembly/hinge system seemed to be binding up as it tried to move. I fidgeted and adjusted and lubed and aligned and tried to rig it but nothing really helped. Needless to say, a binding assmbly could cause premature motor failure. Finally got a new track assembly and now it works slick and easy. Have no idea what that track assmbly costs new from Ford...I actually got mine from a buddy who sold his truck before he got around to replacing it. Good luck.
this is common on ford trucks w/ power windows. my '90 still does it when i roll all the way down it seems like it just gets bound up and sticks there. doesnt do it all the time , maybe 1 out of 10 times. i have to take door panel off, plastic, and then i back out the three bolts almost all the way out (but not all the way) and kinda unstick the motor from the mount bracket. thats it. mesh it back up and tighten 3 screws down. if your window motor has never been serviced you'll need to drill 3 holes on panel to get access to the 3 rivets to drill them out. instead of drilling 3 holes you can get a hand held grinder w/ a cutting blade on it and cut out a section out big enough to access motor. a mechanic told me when i was telling him about this it's real common, and sometimes just a blow to the motor w/ a hammer will be enough to unstick it. havent tried that.
My '88 F-250 does the same thing. It started about 3 months ago after
I had to replace the glass on the drivers side. It got stuck open twice since then but I've been pretty good with remembering to not let it go down the whole way. The passenger side motor's gears stripped and the motor died a couple months ago. I finally got ambitious tonight and changed it for the first time. I was getting tired of pushing it up with my hands every time i hit a bump. $62.99 donated to Advance Auto Parts and about an hour later I was done. It's a pretty easy job if your a contortionist like in the circus:+ , which I am not, but you do get pretty dirty and who cares about that?
My problem with stuck windows on my 89 E-150 van was solved by grinding an extra tooth on the plate for the motor gear. This was only a problem when the window went up. The channel the window seats into was worn, letting the window go up too far. The motor would get stuck when it passed the last tooth on the plate.
