460 Carb Replace or Rebuild?

Team;

I have recently purchased an '87 F-250 4x4 with a 460. The truck has about 96K miles on it. I'm experiencing a lag in acceleration from a standing stop. It looks like this may be a carb issue.

I'm looking for some feedback on whether I should go with rebuilding the existing carb or simply get a aftermarket (street legal) replacement such as a Holley. I live in California so being able to pass smog is a key requirement.

Any comments on doing this?

Is there an advantage in retaining the stock carb as it may be sprecifically tuned to the engine?

Thanks in advance!

460 Carb Replace or Rebuild?

Hi,

I replaced mine with the Holley 600 cfm. I got it from Summit. It seemed to be calibrated just about right, I didn't have to adjust anything. I could't find a new street legal replacement, only reman. While there may be some internal differences, the only exterior clue is the bowl vents. If you need to, you could swap out your old fuel bowls onto the new carb. Good luck.

A Holley carb would work well on your engine, but if you have the knowledge to rebuild the original one you'll save hundreds of dollars. It sounds like it could be the accelerator pump that causes the lag. Hope this helps. 460 Joe

I personally like to rebuild my own carbs. I ahve had bad experience with carb rebuild shops. So if you can get a good rebuild kit with good instructions or you know what you are doing, rebuild is a low cost way to go. Aftermarket carbs are awfully nice too.

Good Luck,
