Ok all, I have searched the forum and could not get find what I was looking for, so here is my issue...
When I turn on my fan for the AC or vent or heat, it works just fine on the first and second settings. When I move the fan speed to the third and last speed, I hear this sound that sounds like the blower fan is hitting something. I turn the speed back to the lower two settings and noise goes away. Sometimes I turn it back to the higher settings and the noise actually will go away but most of the time the noise is there.
I pulled the blower motor out yesterday and set it to where I can turn it on while out of the compartment and I didn't really notice a noise. I wonder if the noise is there but I am just not hearing it since it is not enclosed in the compartment? I also noticed there is a crack in the fan where it mounts to the shaft starting at the shaft and extending out one direction and also 180 degrees the other direction.
Thoughts on if the motor is bad or just the fan? Or even something else that I may not be seeing?
Open it up and take a peak on the inside, it may be something stupid (like a leaf??), or you need a new fan-blower thing. Cracked does not sound promising...
If the squirrel cage (fan) is cracked, it is probably expanding/vibrating enough at the higher speeds to hit the case. I've seen this happen on other vehicles. Sounds it just needs the new fan.
I am in agreement, mine is starting to make a noise (different then what you describe) but its slated to go away and be replaced asap...I just dont look forward to it as I got to remove some other bits I think...but meh....could be worse...
Thanks all for the thoughts. I suspected the squirrel cage since it is cracked but just wanted to see if there was anything I may have missed. I didn't see any leaves or such in the box so I would venture to say the squirrel cage is the culprit. I'll provide updates when I finally get around to changing it out.
