Ok I been reading up and determined that based on what I have read that muffler(s) on our Trucks (truck in sig) can possibly cause some restrictions, and does not really help any thing?
How true is this, and how easy can it be removed? I am down the road planing to straight pipe the truck, yes I know it might be a bit louder, that is fine, especially if I can free up some restrictiveness about the exhaust! Anyways truck in question is a E99 7.3L diesel (Stinky Jr.)
I remember reading a post on here (can't remember the thread, but I THINK It was one of Tuggly's threads about the engine swap hes doing) that 3.5 is optimal for stock set ups and 4" is good for trucks with mods, I could br wrong but I do recall seeing that info, my truck is bone stock aside from the Stock AIS (it was an "after market" option for this truck) so thats why I was going to just settle for a muffler delete and leave whats there alone (if it aint broken I am not going to fix it...) until I absolutely have to replace the exhaust system...
I took the whole thing out and went with a 4" turbo back from MBRP (with muffler). I know others get a 3.5" downpipe then 4" from there. I'll tell you that a 4" mandrel bent downpipe b-a-r-e-l-y fits.
The "restriction" on the stock downpipe is not as bad as it looks. If you're looking to just get a muffler to put on your stock system I've read guys going with the Walker Big Truck Muffler and being happy with it:
I don't think 3.5" is very restrictive, just the (slight) bends in the exhaust and the baffles/packing in the muffler (didn't cut mine open to inspect it on the way to the recycle bin). 4" is more than enough to pass the exhaust as fast as the engine can spit it out and anything more is overkill IMO unless you just gotta have that 10" exhaust tip.
I will say that the MBRP muffler is very nice. It has a straight-through design and is reversible. Install it arrow towards the back of the truck it's louder and reverse the direction (arrow towards the front of the truck) and it's quieter (similar to a glasspack).
well I was just hoping I could undo a clamp or two rip out what ever muffler is there now, then put the straight pip in its place and reclamp it in place and be done, is the stock exhaust supposed to be 3" if so I suppose that would be ok for keeping it as stock as it is now
