Cruise control issues

Hey guys I need a little help figuring this out. I've read through a few posts in this and nothing seems to be quite the same problem I'm having so I'll see if anyone has any ideas...

I have a 1986 F150 with the 5.8 HO. It has factory cruise control that when ever I set it, regardless of speed, it surges up about 8 miles an hour more and then backs off to where I set it only to surge back up again and down again...non stop...any ideas besides a vacuum leak? I don't think that's what it is because I've checked all the hoses and they're good...

Thanks!

I know very little about cruise control, but I seem to remember that long ago [70's or 80's] one of my parent's vehicles had a problem with the set cruise speed varying and the solution was either a vacuum leak in the hose to the cruise control or an adjustment to the small chain which attaches to the throttle [too tight or too loose?].

The write up on speed control in the 1986 EVTM is here: Speed Control - Gary's Garagemahal. However, it really doesn't and much over what David said - check vacuum and the linkage. But, it does say there should not be more than 1/8" of slack in the linkage. If you have more than that the speed on the truck would fall off before the cruise could catch the throttle, and it would surge.

Another possibility is the speedo cable. If it is dry it might cause a wrap up and then a release. I think you can pull the cable apart at the speed control sensor, shown in the link, and lube the cable. But, don't use much lube or you could have a big mess. They make a graphite-based lube, available at most part stores, that can be dribbled in.

Aren't there two pieces to the speedo cable, Gary?

Yes - one from the tranny to the sensor, and the other from the sensor to the speedo. I was hoping both could be lubed by breaking into the cable at the sensor, but I don't know.
