Knocking

I have a 2014 Superduty with 41000 km on it. I was driving in a remote area yesterday about 53 km from pavement. I stopped for a break and had a very noticeable knocking sound that was more noticeable on the drivers side towards the back of the engine. I had no choice but to keep driving it. the truck ran perfectly fine for the 4 hour trip home(1 hour on gravel and 3 hours on highway) when I stopped a couple of times after that there was definately no knocking sound an it is not there today, would anybody have any idea what this could have been? like I said the knocking was so noticeable that you couldnt miss it

Perhaps an injector.

So does an injector make a knocking sound only sometimes? I cant take it in to the dealership as it isnt doing it anymore. Is this something that I just have to wait and see and keep an eye on it? what about reliability if it is an injector, would it still run?

If the injector continues to act up it will eventually throw a code. Then you will have something to work with.

that is not to say it is your issue but it sounds like it maybe.

Have you checked for any codes? You could have one that didn't set a cel.

Sounds like you have an injector issue and sometimes they can make the engine sound like it has a bad rod bearing. I would keep an eye on the oil level and better yet have it checked out.

ThanksTroy, I spoke to a Ford Mechanic yesterday and he said not to worry about it as it didnt throw a code or anything. He said it could be a lifter or something as simple as a bit of bad fuel. He suggested changing the fuel filters. He didnt seem to feel it was a big deal but it is to me
Thanks again

If you happen by the service dept for something else maybe you can get them to buzz the injectors and see if they all pass. They do it with IDS. That is how to do a quick check.

And don't forget that the truck monitors the injector performance too. And when it can't trim the pulse enough it throws that code.

Are you sure it wasn't the typical diesel sound? I get that every once in a while and it goes away. Kind of like that part throttle sound.

Regardless IDS can test the injectors.

I bet it's a one off and doesn't happen again.

Thank you for the responses, it still hasnt happened since Sunday, but it definately wasnt the diesel sound. It was a very noticeable knocking that stood out as soon as I opened the door of the truck. I am still learning about diesels and I was looking for some advice
Maybe it was just one of those things and wont happen again
Thank you all
