I have a 02 f350, I just put stage one injectors and a the ball bearing turbo on it and I can slip the clutch in the higher power settings.
Will a new luk clutch hold it or will I have to go with something else.
I would like to stay away from a ceramic because of the break in period and they jerk when backing up a trailer.
I'm sure LUK makes something that would work fine, give them a call. I'm running AC 160's, stock turbo with billet wheel, and the South Bend clutch in my signature. I only have about 5k on the clutch, but so far I like the feel. I want to say South Bend rated the clutch at "425hp."
I have the 3.73 gears as well. I don't notice any grabby or jumpy feeling, but I've also never towed more than 6k pounds with that clutch, nor have I used 4-low with a big load.
Is the south bend clutch jerky or jumpy? the truck has 3.73 gears and if you don't put it in 4low it is hard to back up a trailer
I have had south bend clutches and from what i have had they are really jumpy. We have some good hills to back into and almost always requires 2-low to get minimal hop. I pull a toy hauler and a 3 horse slant with living quarters ranging 10,000 lbs to 18,000lbs
I put a Valair clutch in my 350 when the stock one decided to throw a spring out. I could make it slip in the higher hp tunes. Organic faced is what you want. All manufacturers probably have one rated to hold your power. Southbend had just come out with one a couple of years ago and I probably would have gone with had I known about it. IIRC it was a 1941HDO rated at 450hp. I like my Valair and it is smooth backing 10k and shifts are also smooth. Only thing I don't like is that it rattles when idling in neutral. Push clutch pedal in and noise stops. I was told by Valair it is because of the heavier duty springs they put in the clutch disk. Not terribly annoying but it can definitely be heard.
Good luck and a transmission jack is the ticket in wrestling that big sucker out and back in!
