Cam Sensor. I chased a "sneeze" at about 2200rpm for a long time. I even replaced the cam sensor multiple times. It finally went away the last time I replaced it, with a Motorcraft sensor. These trucks are know for cam sensor issues.
Now, the last time I replaced it, I also re-wrapped and covered ( electrical tape and flex conduit)the last 5-6 inches of wiring going to the CMP. So, maybe it was the sensor, or maybe I had an electrical issue. One of these days, I will swap the senor again, just to see. But for now, I don't plan on messing with it.
Here is an excellent opportunity to use Torque-Pro, AE or other Software to gather some much needed data in hopes of catching the glitch.
My first question is to ask you to describe what a "Cough is to you?" It may mean something different to another reader. When I hear cough I think of a back-fire through the intake. If that's the case shut it off! Worst thing a Diesel could do.
That sounds like a possibility (cam sensor) basically when im at a steady 2200 rpm it hesitates then resumes to 2200 basically it drops for a fraction of a sec then goes back i cleaned the icb sensor last night that screws off under the powerstroke emblem up front where exactly is the cam sensor and how much are they ?
