I have a 1984 ford f150 xlt with a stock 302 from what I can tell.. I am going to put a rebuilt motor in and deciding replace the stock dampner/balancer. The issue is there is 4 prong ring on the back and looking online no other balancers have them. I found a picture similar to what mine looks like. Is this a stock balancer and is the ring even needed... I have the duraspark ignition and everything online seems to point towards the ring being on 96 trucks
Is your harmonic balancer factory? Are there any factory part numbers on it that you can read?
If your truck has a distributor ignition, why does it need these four prongs?

That tone ring is not needed on your motor but it's presence is of no consequence unless it physically interferes with something.. which it shouldn't so you an still use it.
I got the truck cheap from a dealership. I cannot read any part numbers due to the age and caked on oil. Its a non roler cam motor and is carbureted. Once the mud is all gone ima try and trace the wire from the tone ring sensor and see where it goes
Well im back home and since the last time I looked at it the wire is gone. I cannot remove the timing tab or the sensor... It has a bolt on the sensor also... I will try and upload pictures soon
I am wondering if someone replaced the timing cover and balancer
Yes that is a good possibility, the rubber isolation ring in the balancer deteriorates with age and allows the outer ring to slip and sometimes even come right off, so it wouldn't be unusual to find a newer balancer on an engine this old.
