The coil actually fires when the contact points open, the time they spend closed is called the "dwell", and the primary side of the coil is building up voltage.
The condenser (an old name for capacitor) is connected in parallel across the points, and prevents them from arcing and burning as the points open but it also makes the spark much stronger at the plugs, where it belongs.
Yep, for some reason those capacitors are now difficult to manufacture in a small enough size and still meet the voltage requirement. Seems like somebody signs up here once a month or so with a brandy new genuine chinesium point and condenser set that's junk.
Tedster9 , you are a winner . Made an ugly 4 mi. trip over to my buddies at 9 a.m. this morning . Stalled , an fine for 1/2 mi. , stalled at an intersection but made it there .Started diagnosing the problem by process of elimination . Carb is new , checked fuel pressure = very good & good flow . He had some old school instruments . So instead of a $1.00 condenser I have a about a $500.00 condenser . Oh well at least I know all other components are new & in excellent working condition . .. Took it for a 7 mi. test drive at different rpm ranges .Let Pete drive it back .Think it was the high lite of the week for him . He really enjoyed it . He is building a '36
Thanks to all for your concern & help . Off to the shows sat. & sun.
When the + wire in the dist . shorted out it may have spiked the condenser .
In the old days I always carried a little piece of fine sand paper to clean the points with. The points would would carbon up usually at a inconvenient time.

In a pinch, you could also use one of those emery boards women use to file their fingernails.
Back in "66", as a young working HS graduate, I bought a "35 coupe. Ran fine, with the exception of charging issues, for about 8 months. Then some times it would start, sometimes I needed a push to get it going. After much deliberation, frustration and mistakes, I learned the condenser had given up the ghost, thus causing my issues.
Great little pieces, as long as they work.
