Hey guys, I've got a problem with my 1996 f250 7.3 that I can't seem to figure out. I've owned the truck for a year and this is my first problem.
First off, it's a 1996 with 170k miles and an automatic transmission. Fully straight piped and that's pretty much it.
So I noticed that the other day after my truck gets to around operating temperature, as soon as I take off from a complete stop sometimes, my truck will have a problem accelerating and I mean bad. So it will take off but very slowly no matter how much gas I give it and sometimes I can here the Rpms rising, but the truck still isn't moving any faster. After about 15 seconds, it will finally kick in and drive normal in every other gear. It only happens when I accelerate and it happens very rarely but when it does, it's pretty noticeable and scary.
I have changed the fuel filter and my fuel pressure in constant so I know it's not fuel. Any suggestions? The problem has only happened to me once when I just started it, it took a while to accelerate but it starts and idles fine and drives fine while cruising, it's just at some complete stops.
I've also noticed that it has never once puffed out ANY black smoke no matter what. I can have my foot to the floor and it won't smoke. Also when my foot is to the floor in first gear, it is extremely sluggish and as soon as I get into higher gears, that's when I can get the truck up to higher speeds quicker. Don't know if that's normal.
Stock truck will not smoke, injectors aren't big enough. It could be a number of things, maybe your trans is slipping. Any codes?
No codes, I thought it might be my Tranny. The fluid is a little brown and smells a little bit but the transmission runs at about 160 degrees but at about 100 degrees is when I see the problems.

Same exact thing someone else was saying a few days ago same thing I told him your fluid should not be brown or smell a little bit
Try doing a flush but it's probably toast seeing how you floor the truck to get moving

I don't have to floor it to get it moving again. If I keep my foot in the same position, it will eventually drive normal but I feel it helps if I give it more gas. I've never actually floored it to get it moving again. I just gave it more gas than usual.
Will a chip possibly help it smoke? I don't care to role coal or anything like that, I just want to know when I'm getting the power I want and black smoke helps that.

You were educated wrong. Black smoke is unburnt fuel. Not more power. A Deisel can can make plenty power while being clean. When adding more fuel (chip/injectors) you have to add more air(turbo)

Okay, will is there a chip out there you guys recommend? I've got a custom shop out here that will do a 4 position tune for 250 and I can set whatever I want on the tune.

Well flooring it to get it to smoke is the same thing
Get your trans fixed before you get a chip or anything else
Before tuning you should always make sure your truck is running 100%
Adding a chip to a poor running truck will just temporarily hide a issue till it bust costing you double to fix it.
Okay, I'll take my truck to a certified transmission shop and see what they say. I wasn't going to do the tune till I had it running right. Hopefully the Tranny doesn't need an overhaul. I don't know if the previous owner ever replaced the tranny fluid and hopefully It just needs new fluid and it's not doing what it's supposed to do anymore because the fluid is too worn out.
