Need help with cooling system

I have a 2007 6.0 that this has happened to twice now. It's fine around town but I never hear the can come on. Friday when on the interstate my my temp gauge started to rise past normal operating temperature before fan came on. Is this normal? After the fan came on it stayed at normal temp for the rest of trip

Well, first off welcome to FTE. Next thing on your list should be is to get a devise to get "live info"so we can help get to the root of the problem. Torque,Scan gauge, dash boss are just a few. Best bang for the is the Torque pro but ya gotta get a ELM adapter to read the pids with. Once you got that come on back and we'll help ya get to the root of the problem. In the mean time ck to make sure you have no coolant leaks and the coolant is at the min mark on the degas bottle, that's the new max fill line on our trucks.

and to add on to that sage advice: look at the top of your degas tank and the seams for any signs of coolant (dried) that has come out. It could be as simple as replacing the cap which is cheap (they get tired and don't hold pressure), sometimes the tanks can crack at the seams... And while you are looking at the tank, check out what the coolant looks like (yellow, green, clean, dirty, etc.).

But finding out what some of your operating values are at is key to a happy 6.0 ownership experience...

Oh, and welcome also to FTE

Check your ECT sensor connection for chafed wires or just a bad connection in general, reseat with dielectric grease. Only other thing i would think of for spiking coolant temps is a bad water pump, but i've never seen them go back to working order unless its spinning and catching i suppose

And make sure the EGR is still plugged into the harness.
