Came back across the state yesterday. No wind for the most part so I drove 80 the whole way. I usually don't drive that fast. Anyway the beast seem to run quieter and smoother riding than it did at 75, and the lie-o-meter read 19.8.
Sounds like you trust your lie-o-meter a bit too much.
Moving at a faster speed will always feel more efficient because humans perceive time (and higher speed) as better. Can you share more details as to why your rig is more effective at 80 mph than at 75 mpg? I can get 30-40 mpg on my v10 depending on where I reset the lie-o-meter.
You hear what you want to hear, is what I'm getting at.
Sounds like you had a safe trip, so that is good!!
It just seemed the injectors weren't quite as noisy. Except for the turbo whine once in a while, it was almost Ike I forgot it was a diesel. I've come to the conclusion that the lie-o-meter is off about 3 mpg at least....

DANG The best I've ever gotten is 31 MPG & I was thrilled with that
How many RPMs are you turning at 80 ? My experience with my 7.3 trucks is going over 18 or 19 hundred RPMS, the fuel mileage starts to fall off noticeably.

2250 ish. I do get the best mileage 2000 rpm (72 mph) or below and that is usually what I drive. It just seemed quieter at 80...

Same here, set it about 65 mph, I used almost half the fuel as I did with it set at 80 mph on the same route.

Mine would register 25---down hill. I felt like I was on top of the world until the first hill. I would have thought the first stop at the oil station would have burst your bubble. If not, it must have been divine combustion or too much
