An Uh Oh on First Camping Trip

Just recovered from back surgery and tried to get the first trip behind us. 5 miles from CG in front of a bridge we had a blowout. It made me squeeze my cheeks real tight. Got slowed down, crossed bridge, and off the road. The DW got to change her first tire. They were stock tires. Michelin AT2 with 43k and 5/32 tread left. Replaced with Michelin M/S. An inexpensive weekend trip got real expensive. It was a right front tire.

Did you see where the tire failed? Was it from anything in particular?

I had a blowout towing our last hauler. Not fun on a very busy highway. Glad you got it sorted and made it through OK...

Any low pressure warning, or just boom?
Glad you are all OK and that the truck and trailer are OK as well.

Never good. I would be speaking with Michelin about some warranty.

I hate to say it but if that were the trailer, then you would know about very expensive.

Glad to hear the OP is alright.

I hate to say it, but there won't be much of a conversation for warranty on a 4 plus year old factory tire with only 5/32 (reccomended replacement tread depth) left on it.

Yeah been there. I5 with wall to wall traffic, even the highway patrol couldn't get people to slow down. The wife was a nervous wreck, but nothing else you could do

My F150 had a cut tire on one camping trip and a bolt in it on another. Had to buy a new tire each time. When settling up on the F350, I said no to every thing they offered until they came to tire insurance. I bought the 5 year replacement plan where they replace the tire instead of repair it.

Could not tell where it failed at. We were going 55mph on a 2 lane and it started violently shaking. Immediately let off the gas and then pow. Did not get a low pressure warning for 2-3 secs after blowout. Warranty was in the conversation but at 5/32 and 4 years would have been very little compensation. The warranty book says 6 years and 2/32. I had already planned going with the M/S at the end of camping season anyhow. The tires I had rode well and wore very evenly. I really enjoy this truck-especially after owning a 6.4. Thanks to all of you that provide knowledge on this site. This is the most excitement I have had with this truck.

I hope the remainder of your vacation/trip is less exciting...

Guessing that you had a belt fail in the tire. I had TPMS alert me after I skewered a tire once, and it was almost instant. I pulled over quickly and could still hear air hissing out of the tire when I came to a stop. The fact that you felt shaking before the TPMS light came on suggests the failure wasn't air pressure related.

I had a front tire blow out on a little rice burner I had. That is not any excitement I would care to relive especially on a crowded highway with a trailer in tow - mine was on a back road with no traffic.

The ironic thing was my wife and I were discussing getting new tires just minutes before the BOOM. She was telling me we didn't need new tires. After that she pretty much quit trying to call the shots on vehicle maintenance.

Had a front Michelin stock tire separate at 70mph on my 2011 F250 at 30K mi. I replaced all 4 michelins with Nitto G2s, and never looked back. Now my new 2016 250 came through with Michelins again. Hope that they hold together for awhile, until I can replace them with something else. I am not a Fan of Michelin Tires.
