1996 F150 5.0 - Need pics of timing cover/water pump/acc brackets...

Hey guys,

Don't post here much since my truck seem to be pretty maintenance free nowadays. But need some help on a 96 F150 with a 5.0

My dad bought the truck with the engine already removed and completely disassembled. He's putting it all back together and needs to know which timing cover/water pump bolts are studs for the accessories and which aren't.

Any body have good diagrams, pictures, write ups, etc... that show which are simply bolts to hold it to the timing cover and which are studs that also mount the PS pump/AC, smog pump, alt, etc...?

Thanks in advance!

Anybody willing to assist with this?

Just need a few pictures of the water pump to show which are bolts/studs to mount accessories and which just mount the pump to the timing cover...

This is info from my 5.8 which is essentially the same. The TC & WP bolts don't attach any of the front dress. If you can't find photos, I'll post some tomorrow.

This should give him a start & good luck:

Someone has mentioned before that there is a Dorman replacement kit, but I have not seen one.

Thanks David!

From what I can find there are two studs on the driver side of the timing cover/pump that the PS bracket slides over? I also found where there are two studs on the top most of the pump and they do absolutely nothing.

I found the kit from Dorman too. I'll have to check and see if it includes the driver studs that I'm referring to.

Here's the Dorman kit -
Amazon.com: Dorman Help! 23744 Water Pump Stud *: Automotive Amazon.com: Dorman Help! 23744 Water Pump Stud *: Automotive

Found a few similar kits for the Mustang that may have the right length studs also.

What side of the timing cover is which in the link you posted?

Maybe these from a 1995 5.0L will help.

This is from the '96 service manual. Should help with the engine assembly (I had to do it in two parts because the file was too large):

I think I figured out that the smooth stud is for hanging/aligning the AC/power steering bracket on the front. It does help when putting it back in while in the truck.

Thanks. Was curious what that unthreaded one was for. I used to own a 94 F150 with a 5.0 years ago. Knew it like the back of my hand. But it's been gone for almost 10 years now...

In that really hi tech media illustration (magic marker on card board) the view is from the front. If you set the associated parts on top of one & another, you'll see they can only go one way.

One other thing is that there should be two spacers that go in the lower TC. (Not absolutely necessary, but they help hold the gasket) Ford also recommends a tool to center the TC seal on the crank before bolting it all down. You do need to center the seal so it doesn't "bias it's self" to one side of the crank snout or the other & leak.

Hmm, Any idea on that tool?

I have the timing cover spacers for the two bottom bolts too. Those things help out a bunch (when you have them)

No, Its just an eyeball & by touch kind of thing. Get all the fasteners started & screw them down a little at a time. Helps if you can look straight on at the crank snout. Its more or less one of those things that it just helps to be aware of.

I usually make sure the timing cover is flush with the oil pan rail and tighten it down but lately on the last three engines I put together that's not centering the balancer in the seal.

Pretty easy to do on my 460 Ford, I just slide the crank spacer on the crank snout and use it to center the timing cover. I've had one eat a seal in a matter of a few days because it looked centered and the cover was flush with the pan rail, but in reality it wasn't...
