I picked up this firewall ground wire from a 1984 F150 to replace my missing one.
Can someone tell me what the open plug connector with the attached smaller ground wire is used for? The engine bay was mostly gutted from the donor truck, so nothing was attached to the plug when I grabbed it.
Rick - On Page 10 of the 1986 EVTM Bill has supplied me (and which isn't yet complete) under the EEC Only label there's a ground circuit from G208 on the engine to G710 on the frame, and it has a connector (C787) that goes to the ECA. If you look to the right on that page you can see that C787 is a single-pin connector, but unfortunately there's no illustration in which it is depicted. However, on the next page you can see that G208 is said to be "Near throttle position solenoid" and is said to be shown in Figure 4 on Page 36, although that is for the 300 six, and the V8 version is on Figure 6 on Page 37. And, G710 is said to be at the "LH side of dash panel" and is shown in Figure 4 on Page 19, although it is actually Figure 3.
I say all of that to say that I believe the unused connector goes to the ECA. And, I'm guessing that the later engines all used that ground but those that didn't have the ECA left the connector unused.
From the firewall, where does this wire connect to? It seems rather long to just go to the engine block. Does this connect to the transmission, or bell housing?
Rick - I tried to explain that in post #5. However, I know that is very hard to follow, so I put together a web page on the engine-to-firewall ground here: Engine-to-Firewall Ground - Gary's Garagemahal. Please let me know if it answers the question. Oh, and I hope it was ok to use the picture of your ground wire on my page.
Also, note that Ford told us how large of wire to use on that ground - as shown on that web page. I like to capture those little bits of information when I run across them.

I really enjoy the Garagemahal. It seems to get better and more informative every time I check it out, plus it helps to satisfy my addiction to the Bullnose trucks!
Perhaps you can answer this question for me, and put it in the Garagemahal:
Where are all of the grounds on these trucks?
My 5.0/302 currently has 4: 1. - Battery to frame:
The OEM negative battery cable goes from the battery and bolts to the frame, then...
2. - Frame to engine:
...from the frame, that same cable bolts to the front of the engine block on the passenger's side.
3. - Engine to firewall:
There is a ground wire from the back of the engine that connects to the firewall.
(I think this grounds the dashboard instruments?)
4. - Firewall to hood: On the passenger's side, there is a ground strap that connects from the firewall to the hood.
(I think this grounds the radio and the underhood light?)
