Well I've decided to replace my 87 Bronco rearend (8.8,3.55 LS w/ABS) with a Salvage yard unit ($550.00+exchange, too much??) of the same and was hoping to get some info and advice on pulling it, I've never done this before. Do I remove the parking brake cables from the brake hub or from where it connects to the linkage? It looks like I'll have to disassemble the whole brake shoe system just to get at it and then reassemble it to give them my exchange rear end......is there another way? Are there any other things to be considered in removing the rear end? Is there a certain order in which I remove and loosen componants? Any help would be great. Thanx
i did this a few months ago. not that hard. The rearend i received already had new brakes and emerg. cables attached so i just had to unclip the cable from the frame.
I would recomend if buying one from salvage yard changing the brake shoes and turning or buying new drums anyway.
I broke loose every nut i could and removed rear shocks, took loose the brake lines and disconnected the drive shaft before jacking up the truck.
After removing tires (make sure the frame is supported well with solid jack stands - also attach safety chain to trailer hitch to a a a well if nothing else a solid shade tree......... just in case. you will be under the truck and it has to be safe if i climb under........
remove u bolts (lots of wd40) holding axle to spring pack - have floor jack under center of axle to roll out the back side.
I did it in just a few hours with help from a buddy
I would be very sure of the gear ratio in the new rearend before running your rig in 4WD, regardless of what the diff. tag says. (ie: count teeth, or at least drivestaft revolutions.) It's likely whatever it says it is, but has the potential to get very ugly if not.
