What's the eccentric spacer on the cam sprocket for?
88 302 EFI. Seems like it's for a mech fuel pump, has a Ford engineering part number (E8AE) on it.
Maybe Ford did, but I've seen where the Felpro Gasket set includes the cam eccentric for the mechanical fuel pump. I just figured that whoever repaired or replaced the timing chain just added it cause it was included.
On his engine and the 351 I tore down, both have the blue Felpro gaskets. I know some one swapped sprockets on mine cuz they had different stampings than the other 302, 351's I have. And also they used plenty of that darn orange Gasket sealer!!
Yes that is what it is for.
Its the eccentric cam for a mech fuel pump.
Figured.
Thought it may have been one of those hex-a-just kits.

Odd.
Engine was rebuilt with about 500 miles on it back in 88? 89? (The people who know that are now dead.) Ford did the job.

Not sure. Never seen one like this on an EFI truck. I'm the only person in the last 25 years to see this part. As stated above,, rebuilt at 500 miles by Ford reps from Michigan.

The blue gasket I did roughly 3-4 years ago when I had a bad water leak. I actually didnt pull the timing cover all the way off then... Just loosened it and slid the new gasket into place. Kept the balancer on too. I knew then that I was just buying time, and future me would kick past me's *** for it.
Also, I'll be posting my cam install experience soon. Taking as many pics as I can.
Not sure what year Ford quit putting them on from the factory but the 1989 Ford shop manual shows it for the 5.0L engine and the 1992 Ford shop manual does not show one. I do not have a 1990 & 1991 Ford shop manuals.
All of the 1988 & 1989 FI engines I have tore down did have one.
Just got done tearing down my 90 EFI 351 and yep mine had the eccentric also and my lifters are the same they are just stuck with years of gunk spray them down with cleaner and find something to grip them with and pull, it may take a bit but they will come out.
I worked for Ford back then and they were still putting the eccentric on because the engines that went into industrial and some marine applications were still carburetor engines so they just put it on all of them instead of trying to keep them seperated

Spent about 4 hours with a pair of pliers and some brake cleaner and only got two out.
Went to auto parts store, grabbed the most expensive locking pliers set (14$) and the cheapest set (3$). Also grabbed the house brand carb cleaner and the expensive CRC cleaner.
Spent about an hour and a half getting the other 14 out, the cheaper pliers and cheaper cleaner worked the best, go figure. The three people behind the counter probably had the combined IQ of the average eggplant, and had absolutely no idea what a lifter removal tool was, looked like, or its function.
Oh well. Got them out, new timing set (Cloyes), Cam (Comp cam 31-255-5) and lifters (Comp cams) installed. I'll button it all back up tomorrow with a new ACDelco water pump + seals all the way around. Have the say, the ACDelco pump is miles better in quality over the low end Oreillys house brand.

Glad you got them out and yeah there is a tool kinda like a claw LOL I hear about Parts guys IQs now a days gone are the days of a BOOK.
I went the store across the street from my apartment... I normally visit an oreillys near the body shop I work at, they have a fairly veteran crew there. Few and far between!

It would be an ok 20 foot paint job if the clear coat were cut and buffed. Very disappointed in the prep work. Really inexcusable. I've had three cars painted in my life, and this is easily the worst. Minor dings not filled, scratched paint not sanded, sanded paint looks like they used 240. Orange peel, mistaped lines, I could go on but I'll lose my sense of humor. Still hoping to work with the guy, but not happy.
