I used the Mid-Fifty 22 Gal cross member mount with side fill in the driver side fender with a flip gas cap. I didn't want to have to move the cross members.

Smallello, Does your filler pipe fit under the bed wood without modifications? Or did you have to build a hump in your floor?

It fit under the wood. I changed to a metal bed after but it still fit under the bed side.

Sorry all. I was off Island on a work trip. @jthesby I got the tank from speedway motorsports. It measures 28 1/4, 16 1/2, and 8 High. Not including the tabs. My rear end was moved back almost an inch to center the wheels in the opening so normally it would have more room.
@CharlieLED the rear end moving back is also why the shocks are at such a high angle. It is the stock mounts that they are still connected to so I should be able to get back to the original geometry by cutting those out and moving them one inch back.

I think after all the input ive got from you guys I will grind out the rear crossmember and move it back about an inch and a half. It shouldn't make much of a big deal being only back a little and will give enough room to do a normal exhaust and plenty of clearance. Thanks for the help guys.

The rear had to be moved 1" to center in the wheel well? I never heard of that on the rear, only the front. Was something modified in the rear?

@smallello I didn't do the move myself. previous owner. I actually had a post on here trying to figure out why there were identical mounting holes in front of where the springs are mounted right now. there wasn't clearance issues with anything else so the only thing I could imagine it was to look more centered. It did look right where the wheels were with the fenders on though so I don't want to move them forward now.

for those of you holding your breath in anticipation of how the saga of my fuel tank mounting ends, I have closure for you. I moved the rear cross member back about 4 inches. so it sits between the mounting holes for the bumper mount. sounds pretty easy but those rivets fought back with all their little harts. I mounted the tank with the tabs under the bottom frame rail which sits a little lower but makes it easy remove and also easier to put the bed wood back in. I will see how low it sits after the tires are on. maybe ill make a protective shield for it later if it needs. lots of rough roads here on Kauai. There is now plenty of room behind the rear end to route the exhaust out the back. I reinstalled the smaller cross member forward of the tank. (not in the picture) more frame rigidity in the gap I widened by moving the big cross member back. also it will support an exhaust mount tab when I get to that.
I would also like to say, if I spent as much time actually working as I do staring at my truck thinking about what I am doing next, I would have three of these things by now.

plenty of distance from the pumpkin.

the rail to the left is where the wood sits on. the filler should fit just fine.

Most of you would look a this and grab your ginder to start over but this is the first weld i have ever done on my truck. Kind of excited about it.

just put this in to show that the tank mounting tabs dont match anywhere on the rails. Ive read other people say they had to reweld this tab but im not skilled enough to weld aluminum yet. I will just put washers in there.

Your weld looks good, don't need to grind that one. I fabbed up a brace between the rear spring mount to frame mounts. I'm using a 1969 Mustang gas tank. It fit perfectly between the frame rails just like it was made for the application.

'51 F1 with a '71 Mustang 22 gallon tank. I moved the cross brace all the way back, and added a receiver hitch. Good rear end crash protection.

Roy, The bumper brackets are stock, however I'm working on a '51 F1 Panel Truck. I'm not sure if the rear panel and pick-up truck brackets are the same. I think they are, just a curve on the end of the Panel bumper, like the front bumper.

They added receiver hitches to the first generation Jeep Liberty for this very reason. I didn't complain. It was a recall, so free hitch.
