Classic or custom?

I go back and forth on what I want. I haven't done anything major other than replace the radio with a din stereo. What made you all choose whether to keep it classic or make it custom? what made you add flares and lifts and all that stuff? What made you keep it looking like it just came off the production line?

I like a mix of both.

I got my truck when I was 16. Back then I wanted flashy wheels and cool looking mud tires with a lift. I wanted the latest cd player and subwoofer setup too. Now 15 years later not much has changed but I go back and forth on the lift. Other than clearance for bigger tires I did it because my suspension was shot and it was nearly the same cost to do a deluxe lift kit as it was to replace springs bushings shocks etc. I like all terrain tires better for the road and wear. I am halfway to a full set of bushwacker flares, I like the way they look and if I ever get new paint I can keep on using my truck with less concern for paint damage.

I like the old school look but with some modernizing upgrades for functionality. I like adding the rarely seen items and options too. Really most of my custom stuff was done because it was the best or only option when a repair was needed or an upgrade was desired.

It all boils down to personal preferences and what you have seen and like.

Functionality with a little classic styling is what looks best for me.

I like the classic look but there is some stuff that can be made to look better and function better aftermarket. A good front guard that's simple but functional is good example. Make it look classic with straight lines but not like you tried to do the easiest possible design. Adds utility to the truck but still looks good and isn't gaudy. Benifits all around.

Now steps, NO. I think they look ugly and even after I do my 4x4 conversion and a lift I still won't have them. Even though they would be functional it just looks weird to me.

Really just make sure whatever your doing isn't gaudy, is functional, has nice simple design and you're gonna be good.

I prefer a nice mix of both. Improve things for comfort and reliability but keep it looking period correct. Not necessarily factory correct, but more like geee.........why didn't Ford do that? Period correct accessories are nice too......

Mix of both but at the end of the day, it's what's going to make you happy? Take about 30 minutes and just look at it, imagine it both ways in your minds eye. Take some pictures and do some Photoshopping/ picture editing so you can get a guess of what final product looks like. It doesn't matter at anyone else thinks as long as it puts a smile on your face when you see it. I'm not a fan of the big monster trucks these fords get turned into sometimes but I can def appreciate the art and effort put into them..

+10 on the above - do what makes you smile. Me, I'm kind of a traditionalist and keep my external changes minimal - added driving lights, better mirrors, and am about to switch to halogen headlights. Most of what I do is to improve functionality - going to re-foam my seats with stiffer foam, adding EFI manifolds and 250 rockers to help the old girl wheeze a little better, planning additional engine oil and transmission fluid coolers, maybe put a limiter on the power steering and install neoprene bushings to improve its numb feel. End of the day, it's what YOU want and what pleases YOU, unless you are planning to sell it or show it in a class that restricts changes. Only one you absolutely need to impress in life is YOU,
