Hello. I have a 2003 Ford F-350 super duty 6.0. A few weeks ago it starting loosing power, it wouldn't even go up to 15 mph. It now won't even move. There is 0 power. When I press the gas the motor bogs down to a very low idle and wants to die. I also had recent trouble with it starting. It would wind up to a very very low idle and about a minute later it would crank up to full idle. I changed the fuel filters (on top of the engine and under the cab) and also changed the fuel pump under the cab. After that I still have no power when pressing the gas it will still act like it wants to die. Any info is wanted!!!! Thanks
Sounds like you've pretty much covered the common fuel system issues. Problem is, there Is so much computer controlled stuff under the hood that it's hard to do much without some type of device to look at codes and sensor readings. If you have a smart phone there are apps for that, also small devices like ScanGaugeII or Edge Insight, laptop software or handheld devices.
Does the check engine light come on with the key-before starting the engine? Does it stay on after its running? Many chain type auto parts stores will read the codes for free. That's kinda hit or miss as all scanners are not created equal and most use an inexpensive device for this service. If you get a code great, if it shows none it may not be right. You don't have to have a check engine light on to have a code stored. This is the best way to decide which way to go with your troubleshooting.
Just a couple of complete guesses but you could try unplugging the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor. The EBP is on the end of a metal tube coming off the driver side exhaust manifold. If it starts and runs better the sensor could be shorted internally and causing low power to all the other sensors powered by the same circuit. Another guess would be to unplug the Injection Pressure Sensor. The ICP on a 2003 is a booger to get to, its behind the turbo and many get to it from under the truck.
There is a thread in the Tech folder here in the 6.0 forum specifically about low power troubleshooting and another 6.0 bible that that has a lot of great pictures to help you get familiar with where all the stuff is under the hood.
You absolutely need to get something to read data live, or it's all shooting from the hip.
Sometimes it works and sometimes you end up a half mile off.
6.0 is too $$$ to just throw parts at and hope it will run good again.
Get a way to read live data and we can really begin to narrow things down, and welcome to FTE.......tons of knowledge right here.
not really. They are talking about a Scan Gauge or Torque Pro to read the data in real time. Without that, it's a guess and/or throw parts at it game. It's an 03', most likely its the HPOP... why the test for ICP.
You could try an air test, but since you don't know the pressure it was making before you pulled it apart, that's really not useful. Put air to it and see if it shows a leak, you may get lucky... but shop air is pretty low compared to the 4000psi the pump is capable of. Since the shop air can't go that high, your kind of guessing, but it may show a leak.
You pulled the ICP plug and tried to start it? If it was making good pressure (500+) then it would have started, but if there's not enough, it won't even fire. Without a gauge, it's really a good guess. Try the air test, see if you can find a leak.
Either way, the HPOP's in your hand, turn the gear and see if it feels smooth, or rotates a little then stops or feels stuck and then moves on.
I'd put an Adrenalin pump in it, the Ford re-mans are pure junk and you may need to replace several to find a good one.
If it was a turbo problem..... seeing the actual pressure of the pump would kind of point that direction to the turbo. We're guessing with $1000 parts, how much would you like to spend.... $5000 in parts or $150 on a live data gauge?
