hello all, I have an 02 ranger xlt 3.0, it started having a rough idle, codes say cylinder #2&3 misfiring, changed plugs, wires, coil pack, didn't help, still same code, checked injectors on right side, all 3 had ohm reading of 15.8-16.5, the injectors were clicking like they are supposed to, sprayed carb cleaner around the intake ports, didn't change the idle at all, what else can I check or do? with out tearing the engine apart, unless of course I have to, the truck has been very good to me, it's got 205,000 miles on it, I need it to last at least another year, any help would be appreciated
Welcome to FTE.
Seeing as how cyls 2&3 are next to each other, maybe put the head gasket on your suspect list, so maybe perform a compression & blow down test on them to see if the head gasket has blown between 2&3 & if the blow down test is ok, maybe with the miles on this puppy, the compression test could shed some light on receded valves, as a vintage high mileage 3.0L Vulcan is also known for that.
More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
hello pawpaw, thanks for the input, I didn't think it would be a head gasket because I don't have any water in my oil, and i'm not losing any coolant, could it still be a head gasket then? thanks again for your help
If you have, or can come by a vacuum gauge, hook it up & compare its readings to the various scenarios here, How to Use and Interpret a Vacuum Gauge that relate to your miss problem & let us know what you find. you'd likely be more interested in scenarios 5-6-7-8-13.
