Apologies if im posting this in the wrong forum i just made my account but i need some advice on truck im looking at. Its a 1999 F250 superduty triton 6.8 v10 for $1400 but it needs a new steering column and has a hole in the exaust. It has 215000 miles on it. Would love for someone to help me out here as this is my first vehicle im buying and dont know much about vehicles
Unless you know how to do your own work on autos, you should stay away from any over 100,000 miles as many things will be needing replaced and getting them fixed will cost you big time unless you do it yourself which you can find much help on the internet/forums to help you. My 2 cents..
^^^ what he said, you got to learn how to work on vehicles if your into nostalgia. But for 1400 its worth the risk, if you find its to much trouble, you can always sell it and you might be a ble to double your $$$
I think it's a great idea to buy it, and I think also you should make fixing it yourself a condition of getting where you want to go. Skill is good. If this motivates you to become skilled, there is nothing but benefit in that.
You should never, ever pay somebody else to work on it. That's how you avoid "cost you big time". If you don't get good service out of it, heck, you're only out $1400. The steering column will be a simple repair. You'll have to learn how to get stuff from the junkyard.
Driving it is another matter. They burn a lot of gas, so this is not a strategy for getting transportation cheap. It's more like getting a hobby and some knowledge cheap.
Anyway, I just wanted to chime in and say knowledge is good, skill is good, and it's okay to work through things and learn.
Thanks for the advice guys really just looking for something me and my dad can work on together and I'm wanting to learn a lot more about vehicles so I'm thinking it would be a good experience to start learning. Gas isn't really a problem either because i have another vehicle so i wouldn't have to drive it all the time just looking for a project to help me gain some experience. Thanks again for the quick replys.
Im not going to look at it until sunday but this is what the guy told me. "First and foremost it needs a new steering column. I've taken the existing one apart so I can show you what broke, but in a nutshell the steering wheel is "wobbly". I still drove the truck locally but I would advise you against driving it until it is replaced."

Looks to me like you found what you were looking for.
There will be a lot more to work on than just those two items, you can be sure.
Quick Update didn't end up buying it there was a lot more wrong then what they guy led on. Tailgate fell off when we put it down and the truck couldn't get past 40 so decided it was a bit to much work and decided not to buy it.
Too bad was subscribing in hopes to watch this project unfold. Good thing maybe that you walked away I'm quite certain you can find better to work with.
On a side note rather 213k isn't all that much for a V10 I'm wondering why the lack of power.
Anyways good luck on your hunt, come back when you find the one you decide to get your hands dirty with
Just thought id let you guys know that i ended up getting a 92 f250, it has a 5.8L V8 and has 128k miles on it and real clean on the inside just letting anyone that cares know
