The odometer in my Ranger stopped about 90K. The speedometer works okay but I need the odo too. The local Ford dealer says it can't be fixed due to lack of parts. Any ideas? I get this “lack of available parts” thing all the time from these guys but they want me too trade in my baby on a new one.

Isn't it great that Ford rapidly makes their parts obsolete?
Do a Google search for "Odometer Gears LTD".
Looks like they have one listed for your Ranger. Somewhat pricey and there's probably more plastic in a gumball machine prize, but when they got you by the brass ones, what are you to do?
I'd bet there are other companies who make them also, so do a little searching.
yea i just had the thermostat housing crack on my 1999 2.5 ranger and calling around got all kinds of high prices and then say they couldnt get it it s obsolete,,,, so i went down to the local dealer ship and he found me one said it was the last one in the state,,, for 70,,other places were quoteing 120 to 150 well when i got it i was surprised it had the 2 sensors on it with th gasket,,,, the other dealers were quoteing with sensors 190 and up and then said they couldnt get it,,,,, i lucked out i guess,,, and also check and see about other vehicles that might use same part (mustang and such) because i had a 1989 ranger the nylon bushings on the stick shift went out so the stick would just lay against my leg our head to the passengers floor board when i went to dealer it was obsolete and couldnt get it so did some checking and the nylon bushings in a mustang tranny was the same ordered them fit right in and fixed that problem
manuf are only required to maintain parts I believe for 10 years. Dont know if any other years have the same part or not? Anyhow look for a speedo repair shop in your area, they generally have parts or know where to get since that is their specialty.

Wrong. That is an internet myth. They are only required to maintain replacement parts until the warranty expires. After that, their accountants tell them to keep or discontinue the specific part. However, if the part they sell is in demand, or if they still have some sitting on the shelf somewhere and a sale still makes them a tidy profit, they will continue to sell the part.
Don't believe me? Ask a Ford parts man who really knows his job and he'll tell you the same thing.
Thanks, guys. I was under the impression that all this was under the control of the computer. Seems odd to an old guy who remembers one speedometer cable covering both functions: speedometer and odometer. I'll look into it and see if I can find a specialist in the area. Also, do you know if the computer registers the accumulated mileage on the vehicle?
My Ford dealer says yes but never seems to find out for me.
