Check engine

Recently replaced intake manifold and gaskets and valve cover gaskets on a 2001 2.3 L. Cant get the check engine light off. I turned on the ignition without starting for about 30 seconds after reconnecting the battery, did it a couple times in fact. It doesnt come on until the next time I start the truck. Any suggestions?
