Been following this thread, nice work.

 

Quick update. Got the axle torn down and cleaned up. Bearings are in. Things to do still: clean up backing plate/wheel hub, order brakes and seals, and paint. Sadly the Eastwood ceramic paint I was going to use is on back order until mid March. Not sure if I can wait that long lol.

Next update will probably be when the axle is painted... so it may be mid March.

Do you guys recommend the rear cover gasket or just use a fat bead of RTV? I think rockauto or summit has the gasket for $12. Wasting time and money to get that? I've read a lot of people skip gaskets, just didn't know pros or cons.

I just saw your restore thread.... I have really enjoyed reading from the start.

My $.02 on the gasket thing..... I don't think you can beat a good cork gasket if you want to keep your rear diff cover dry.
In the past (while doing the old flat fender Jeeps) I used the gaskets and I put a coat of the Permatex black aviation sealant on both sides...... Jeeps are notorious for marking their territory..... LOL.
Any way.... no runs, no drips, no errors and nobody left on base.

Thanks! I already bought some permatex for gear oil. I'll definitely keep that stuff in mind if I have a leak and need to fix it.

 

So got tired waiting for Eastwood to get paint back In stock. Decided to give rustoleum a chance. So stay tuned in the next couple years as I will update how it holds up. If it's crap, I'll do it again with Eastwood, if not I'll be happy it's done now!

So far I have the primer on, rear cover sealed, brakes are ordered, and 2 questions. 1. I've read a million recommendations for gear oil... what would be best for the rear diff. I live in the Midwest and get freezing winters and scorching summers. 2. What color should I paint the hubs? Since they stick out thru the rims, should I keep everything black? Or try to match the silver of the rims? Some quick crappy photoshops to show what I'm asking.

 

I have always painted mine black. I can't remember what color they were originally..... (Mostly rust colored.....)

As far as which gear oil to use...... I can't say.... I'm sure most will be more than sufficient for the job.
At one time, there was a list of Ford accepted oils and other fluids....
Maybe Numberdummy knows.

Thanks mike! I think I'll stick with black for now and if I don't like it, it should be easy to just paint the outer parts silver.

Progress! Haha well got one wheel cylinder in. Part got delivered today, will have parts being delivered all week. Sometimes you just can't wait to put something on lol

Planning to paint the axle Tuesday or Wednesday. Waiting for a non rainy day.

 

Also after reading one of meridanmikes threads I saw he mentioned evaporust; he used it and became a believer and now I am too! Figured it was perfect to try on my hardware for the axle.

I HATE wirewheeling nuts and bolts to clean them up. You never get it all and you rip your fingers a few too many times. Can says to soak for 12hrs. I put them in about 3PM and took them out about 10AM the next day. 19hrs total but I check at about 6hrs and they already looked great.

 

Is that a "Brand New" wheel cylinder I see? Sure doesn't look rebuilt to me.
