OK, I know I have seen this on here many, many times but I still need help. Can I just add the power steering gear box from a 1971 - 1979 to my steering column, and would the steering pump
need to be from the same model or could i use different? example 1972 gear box and a 78 pump. Sorry for asking this but I did not see pictures so I have been a little lost. Thanks for the Help
At the rear of the spring perch on the steering box side the newer style box needs about 1 square inch removed to clear the longer box. I have done a couple with a torch but use a die grinder & a cut-off wheel now. I usually eyeball it & cut it, make sure it clears, then weld the piece back in from the underside. The biggest problem is you'll need the PS steering column from the donor truck as it's shorter. It's a easy job if you've done it before or you have patience & some time to do it. I prefer it to the Bendix as the boxes are getting cheaper & rebuilds are cheap. If you want, feel free to e-mail me & I can send some pics.
qtrmiler. Please do a technical article and send it in. I have never used the Bendix boxes, in fact they are quite uncommon around here. I use the Ford boxes (core 150.00) and hunt down a short column. The longer columns can be shortened as well (easier deal with floor shift). Post those pictures. The pullies, pump and engine brackets are available in Junk Yards but it is difficult to get a complete set from one truck. Finding the pullies is the PITA! After you have all the parts collected it is a bolt in swap. I like 76-79 for the Junk yard parts. And tell the parts clerk its for a 79 otherwise they havent a clue.
Running an early style P/S pump on a later style integral box can cause box to blow out seals & leak.
Conversely, running slipper type pump (late style-rear reservoir) will make early type boxes chatter & bind.
Guys use early pumps cause they have FE engines & coming up with FE brackets for slipper pumps can be tuff. BUT pumps from a slave system will destroy integral box, especially in winter when PSI gets radical w/ cold hyd oil.
So not just any old FoMoCo P/S pump works on every P/S Box.

Thanks for info, I have located a complete setup gearbox, hoses, pump pullies, brackets, for $65.00, will be installing this weekend. Thanks for all the help, and may run in to some more questions.
I have an FE engine in my 66. What was the last year of the FE in F Series trucks. My engine has pulleys for AC and Power steering on the engine now but no brackets. Thanks.
76 was the last year for FE in pickups. 65 bucks is a real deal, I have seen the gear alone go for that. I would core the gear, you get a warrenty and it is a heavy piece so you don't want to install it more than once. I use a rope around the gear to take the weight off while I put in the bolts. Better would be an engine hoist. The Ford gear doesn't require a notch in the crossmember. I have had to bend the engine perch and sometimes the frame rail lip to get the box to rotate far enough to install the last bolt, but this is a bolt on deal. Damn, 65 bucks can you believe that?
