Hi all, new to the forum..... I have a 75 highboy with dana 60s, c6 tranny and a floor shifter, 410 gears, and the best part, a 460 big block. I'm not sure what i want to do with it yet. At first I wanted to swap to a diesel but its too expensive and difficult to do. So, I think i want to build out my 460. Any advice on how to build out my motor? Looking for hp in the 500-600 range. Also should i go to fuel injection or stick with a 4 barrel. I need daly driver reliability. will efi be better for this?
All depends on how fast you want to go and how deep your pockets are. If you think a diesel swap is to expensive, then you are like most of us, not filthy rich and work hard for our money.
I am not trying to offend any filthy rich people either, and I know that some filthy rich people get that way with lots of hard work and proper investments. lol
Alum intake, 4 bbl, straight up timing, cam and some headers. It also depends on what type of heads that 460 has as far a chamber restrictions and needing some head work done to compliment the headers properly.
If it is a dog now you might look into what axle gears and tire size you have. Some times a regear can wake a truck up.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 460 to drop into my 78 F250. Realistically I may be pushing 300 to the wheels if not less. So far I have 5K into the engine, so 500hp is not that achievable on a budget.
My set-up is trickflow heads, a mild cam, weiland stealth intake manifold, edelbrock 800cfm performer, L&L fenderwell headers. The compression ratio is 10.29:1 with a 0.048" head gasket, it will be timed straight up, MSD ignition.
The biggest issue is you're putting this into a heavyish truck. A simple head, cam intake carb exhaust oil pump can bring a lot of power, but its north of 6000RPM and the cam doesn't start to build power until 2800-3500 rpm and it continues to climb. Before I'm done with then engine swap I will already be north of $7K. And the engine is at the machine shop.
Don't get me wrong, the 460 is more than capable of achieving 500 N/A horsepower and it can be done inexpensively. Just take into consideration that you don't want to throw small CC large port/valve heads on a worn bottom end.
A high HP/TQ engine:
800-1000CFM carb performer airgap intake or similar aftermarket heads (AFR/Trickflow/edelbrock/ford racing) aftermarket pistons and rods, full roller cam, balanced rotating assembly, ARP everything, block tested for cracks, line honed, decked for correct quench, atleast 9.5:1CR cam with greater than .600" lift at minimum, high volume oil pump. If you can stroke it then do that. Go onto summit and price all that out and see what it costs.
People will say that DOVE-C heads build a lot of power, and they do but you're limited to compression ratio of 9.5:1 max unless you really retard the timing or are running race fuel. Don't forget youre in a heavy truck and the engine will react to that and not a light mustang, timing is important.
If I could do it again and realize I'm already 3/4 to a 6BT swap I would of just don't the 6BT sawp, or done an EFI system with a turbo, which may be next years project.......
