So, I added another bouncing baby to the family and now I am looking to grow the fleet as well. I just need help as I weigh the options. I am considering either an 09-14 expedition or a 7.3 equipped excursion. I have never had an expedition but read mostly positive things about them but I am somewhat skeptical of the long term reliability of it 200k +. I like to keep vehicles for awhile but don't want one that will crap out after I get it good and broke in. I trust the reliability of the excursion drive train, but I don't want to be tinkering with it all the time due to age taking its toll. Who has each and do you like it?
I have lurked on the other forums which has helped a lot but I am still very uncertain.
my family has an expedition has a little over 300k on a stock tranny, and it has NOT been babied. front end has been completely rebuilt including the rear end...i blew the rear u-joint in OC for cruise week...thats a whole nother story though...
dads daily driver is a 6.0 excursion and it is much more comfortable imo but it has had the whole drivetrain replaced already(2003 model)
All the expys I that year range seem to have the 5.4. The new ones have the Eco boost as an option but the newer interior is not comfortable and it laid out weird
Stay away from the devils curse, stupid cam phasers, at work im dealing with an 05 f250 3 engines installed on the same truck all under warranty due to the cam phasers failing and scoring the camshaft, roller bearings and end caps, I hate that truck, the older 5.4 2v are bullet proof but these things suck. All with good maintnace and 5w20 oil since new. 4 of them have the distinctive tractor sound, and misfires, just waiting on them to crap out and get rid of them.
It towed our 8,xxx travel trailer alright thru mountain passes,( I was over my GCW by 3200lbs) but more power was always desired, I wanted to do some 4.30 to give it more umph but it stayed in the back burner. Better off getting a v10 X with 4.30 according to the Excursion brethren, never driven one so no reviews from me.
Mpg's before mods 15mpg after mods 16.2 highway doing 75-80. One time I kept it at 65mph and manage to squeeze 17mpg. Towing I did get 8--9 mpg doing 65mph. Overall I do like the 5.4 2v, they have proven to last for ever some at work are over 250k one just hit 350k all stock with service bed. The only v10 2v we have also at 370k iirc stock everything to.
I just did plugs and coil packs on an 06 expy with the 5.4 3 valve. Broke one plug off, but the removal tool worked to remove it. Runs real good and has good power, has 190k on it. IMO the 2 valve 5.4 in a bigger vehicle is pretty gutless.
