Hi everybody,
my brother just picked up a 98 Mercury Mountaineer with the 302 AWD for $150. It needs heads as the heads on it (GT40Ps need machining that he can't afford). He is giving my dad the GT40Ps for a project mustang my sister has and in trade we are giving him some old E7TEs that are off my old engine I no longer need. They are in perfect shape and I was talking to somebody about putting them on this mountaineer and he said that it won't run right with the E7TEs. Is this true?
The mountaineer is only a beater truck for him to get around in to preserve his 91 F150. Is it going to run good enough to drive back and forth (he isn't worried if he looses power)?
Thanks
Trav
The biggest difference between the GT-40P heads from all the earlier production heads is the angle of the spark plug in the combustion chamber. It provides a better burn for the fuel/air mixture. The exhaust manifolds or aftermarket headers are bent a bit differently to clear the revised plug angle. Mustang guys are often scavenging the GT-40P heads off of Explorers and Mountaineers for their cars because they are an improvement over earlier stock heads and are a cheap upgrade in performance.
Me personally, having played with pushrod 5.0s for years I'll never use another iron head on any 302 or 351W. I'd rather save the money over a few months for a good set of aluminum heads. It is worth it in weight saving and most of all in power gains.
