120K Service

Greetings all........

I'm at 119K on my 2000 7.3l Excursion and am planning on the coolant flush and fill at 120K. That being said, I want to install a coolant filter and was wondering if I should install it now before I flush and fill or wait to install the filter after the flush and fill is complete???

Thanks.......

I'd wait till you're done so you don't clog the filter with any junk that's floating around in the old coolant...

Agreed. Purge and clean first, then install, then fill. No sense in shortening a new filter's cycle by installing it before the flush.

After.

Make sure you do a good, complete backflush using the procedure outlined here: Gooch's Coolant Flush Procedure and In-Depth Coolant Information - FTE

Don't forget to turn on the heater for the rear, turning the temp dial to the hottest position when flushing the old coolant and the tap water.

I strongly suggest you upgrade to an Extended Life Coolant (ELC) meeting CAT EC-1 specs for diesel engines.

I wasn't sure if it was better to filter out the gunk or flush it out.

Put it on after to grab all the stuff that will be stirred up but not necessarily removed during the flush.

I switched to ELC coolant after my flush and have been very happy.

You first flush the coolant out with tap water, then you flush the tap water out with distilled water.

I need to do this but our tap water is pretty much salt water. It leaves a nasty residue on anything it touches and has rusted a lot of plumbing in this area. I wont be introducing it to my engine. I plan to drain, fill with distilled. run for a while, then repeat until its as clear as possible. Then refill with Zerex G05. I really miss good tap water.

This was the cause of death to the first engine in the Chevelle. I had no idea the water was so disgusting, the house I was renting at the time had inline filters on anything that had running water. I never saw them as the HO had them all tucked away in a maintenance cubby behind a panel next to the water heater. Slick setup, but so was that engine...

Please see the link I posted for you in post #4.

There's a lot of info there, especially if you're gonna upgrade to the CAT EC-1 spec'd OAT coolant or change out your water pump, but it's a great resource for flushing and maintenance on your rig.

Nuff said.....I didn't read the thread thoroughly enough.....Where are yall finding the Chevron Delo ELC? Amazon?

Is it necessary to change the water pump at this time? What are the signs it may be toast?

Amazon, yes.

New pump for preventive maintenance? Your choice, but not a bad idea at that mileage if it's the original pump.
