F450, slide in camper, MPG ?
Hi, So I've ordered a 2016 450 and while I wait I'm trying to figure out how my fuel economy will be with my 2400 lb camper on the truck.
My current 01 diesel Ram with the camper gives me an average of 17.5 mpg going about 50-55 mph. The camper has never been off the truck in 16 years.
The new 450 will get the camper on at delivery and never come off because it won't be legal to drive without a CVOR in Ontario, but with the camper on it's status is considered a motor home.
Is it uprealistic to hope for 14-15 mpg at 50 mph which is actually the speed limit on all the roads I drive on or am I looking at more like 10 mpg.
Here is a picture of my ram and camper that I've been driving ( if it came out) Thanks for your opinions.

That's a fairly light camper so you shouldn't loose too many mpg with it on. I presume you bought the 6.7 motor. I don't know what they get for mileage to start with but I am sure it wont be quit as good as the old dodge? I have a big 4000lb camper. My old V10 motor got 14mpg empty and 10 mpg hauling that big camper. I just bought a 6.4 diesel and am hoping for 14-15mpg out of that rig with the camper. Still winter here so wont know for awhile.

Just curious why you think you'd need a CVOR?
If the trucks over 4500 kg (and it will be...) you'd need an annual safety certificate; but as long as the GVWR is under 6000 kg (13,200 lbs) - a full CVOR isn't needed for a personally owned, non-commercial use pickup.

Thanks for the replys. CVOR is required because the GVWR is 6350 kg. (14,000 lb )
So the campers got to be on all the time because the truck doesn't qualify for the personal exemption. But there's a lot of mixed messages from the transportation people so far.
I'm still glad I ordered a 450. It's a lot of value for the money, doesn't cost much more than a 250 0r 350. You can't have too much truck.

It's a grey area, for sure... Talk to the MTO and OPP, you'll get different answers.
There is a CVOR exemption for non-commercial motor homes; BUT since you've crossed that magic 6000kg threshold, you may not be exempt from running a log book. I went back this morning, and took at look at the CVOR website... The rules truly are all over the place.
The one thing that does seem consistent, at least, is that the MTO/OPP don't generally look at non-commercial vehicles, unless you do something foolish to get their attention first. So even if you aren't in compliance with the laws, they (probably) won't notice or care...
Just an aside - you may need an upgraded license, as well - with a truck weight over 4600kg - you could be into "D" territory if you ever want to hook up a trailer of any size.
And yes, it's a nice truck - I stayed with a 350 SRW when I bought mine in the fall, only cause it's also my daily driver, and I'm in Toronto often enough that a dually would make me scream; but I agree, not many regret buying bigger then they "need"...

I'll still be in G territory as long as the GCWR is 11,000 kg or less. That means I can still haul a 10,000 lb 5er.
I'm really happy I ordered a 450. I don't live in a city and I avoid them as much as possible. Now all I need is money for fuel. I'm really hoping for 15 U.S. mpg with the above camper if I keep it at 50 mph. I've been getting as much as 20 U.S. with the Ram and camper and very careful driving.

f 450 2016
good luck man....I got a 2016 f 450....it will move mountains....but it LOVES fuel. The 430 rear end is brutal.....I have a f 350 in same config but with 373......WAY better on fuel but doesn't tow nearly as well. The f350 would have handled your camper just fine....I pull a 20500lbs rv with the 350 no problem. The 450 climbs hills way better in mountains though...but costs me about 3 to 4 mpg. if I go east I use f350....if I go west I use f450. f450 is plat and f350 is xlt work truck.....kinda wish for the extra time it takes that I would have bought 2 f 350. only adds about 1 hour to trip to west coast but I save 200 bucks in fuel.. I get about 12 empty and 8-9 loaded and drops to 6 with big trailer.

don't be depressed man
It is an AWESOME truck...you will love it....I tried mine at 50 mph today for about 35 miles (50 kms). The milage was worse then 62 mph (100 km). My truck does best at about 60-65 mph. If you count on 13 mpg avg you will be pleasantly surprised. .if you plan on 20 mpg you will hate it..It pulls better then my sport Chassis m2 106 freightliner and gets twice the mileage. Waiting to see 2017 f450 and f350 specs and I will trade m2 for one of them....you will not mind the fuel when you see how steady and powerful your truck is

Ha 5000 lbs is not the problem with the camper at all....but it acts like a giant wind break... my covered car hauler only weighs in at 6800lbs with my car in it.....and it is hardest on fuel....If any wind at all.....I get 8-9 mpg with rv@ 20500 lbs....and get 6 mpg when I tow excavator that maxes out at 30g with trailer....I am sorry but I doubt 13 with camper....I can get 13 empty if I am good to it....I think you will be in that 11 mpg range. I put my 6000 lbs processor head I it to take for dealer warrenty I didn't even know it was in there.....but it was not hanging in the wind causing drag
